M&S sets date for its Eclipse retail outlet


MARKS & Spencer has signed a lease with Gallagher Properties on its new store off the M20, at Eclipse Park,Maidstone. Aspokesman for the retailer said


“delays at the developer’s end” hadpushedback anearlier forecast that the store could open in Octo- ber, but now it was hoped that workwould start on site. The store will sell clothes and


homeware, have a food hall, and a café.And, at 7,808sqm(84,044sqft) it will be larger than the one at nearbyHempstead Valley. The new opening date of next


summer will bring the project more in line with previously an- nounced plans to close its Week Street storewhen the lease expires in 2022. At the time, a spokesman said: “The intention is that our leasehold store will close either at the end of the lease or, ideally, to allow staff to transfer to the new store at Eclipse Park.”


The storewill need up to 300 full


and part-time staff. Originally, Waitrose was ex-


pectedtomove onto the site,which is owned and being developed by Gallagher’s, in spite of having plans approved by MBC in May 2017. Gallagher hopes the M&S storewill attract further interest in the site,which also has permission formore offices and a hotel. Gallagher Group chairman Pat
