Drink-driver crashed after a trip to the pub

A CLEANER, who had downed pints before driving, crashed into a car as it waited at temporary traffic lights inAylesford, a court heard. Jane Lamonte (53), of Saltings

Road, Snodland, had been to the pubwith her disabledmother be- fore getting into her Vauxhall Corsa. Prosecuting, Debbie Jones told

MaidstoneMagistrates Court: “At 6.10pmonDecember 16 last year, the victim was in stationary traf- ficwhen the defendant drove into the back of her Volvo.” The court heard the defendant

was taken to hospital and, follow- ing a blood test, was found to be more than two and half times the legal limit for alcohol. Speaking fromthe dock, a tear-

ful Lamonte (pictured) said: “I can’t explain why I did it, I hurt mymumand I think I injured the lady in front. I feel really bad

about it, I have never done any- thing like that before. “I used to have alcohol prob-

lems but, even then, I never drove. I haven’t had a drink since the incident, I don’t even want to think about drinking.”

The court was told Lamonte

had been drinking cider the evening before the accident and went to the pub with her mum earlier that afternoon. The plan had been to have one pint, but she ended up drinking “three or four” after bumping into friends. She said she felt fine to drive,

but accepted she did not give it due consideration. She could have phoned her son or a taxi, but did not, and for that she was em- barrassed. Chairman of the bench, Martin

Alderman said: “This incident is aggravated by the fact there was a road traffic collision, and some people were left injured by your driving.” Lamonte pleaded guilty to

drink driving andwas ordered to carry out 60 hours of unpaid work and a £170 fine. She was also disqualified fromdriving for 22months.
