Haulage boss apology for lorry’s illegal trip

AHAULAGE company has apol- ogised for breaking the lorry ban on the B2163 between Leeds and Langley. A driver steered an articulated

truck through the villages on his way to Staplehurst in direct defi- ance of the weight restriction im- posed on the route from the A20 to theA274. The Devon-based William C

Hockin vehicle was spotted squeezing down a narrow single lane past a row of parked cars, missing wing mirrors by inches, according to awitness. Local people have long com-

plained the police do not enforce the lorry ban, making it easy for haulage firms to take a short cut through to the Sutton Road, rather than taking the longer route viaWillington Street. Steve Bullock, transport man-

ager for William C Hocking of Barnstaple, said: “The driver said the satnav took him that way. By

the time he realised he shouldn’t have been on that road, itwas too late to turn around. “I can only say sorry to the res-

idents because it is not company policy to defy weight restrictions or take short cuts through villages wherewe are notmeant to go.” The witness who took this pic-

ture at about 8am on April 26 said: “He wasn’t driving aggres- sively and thankfully he didn’t damage any of the parked cars. If the police did their job, they would not be coming through here day and night.” Parish councillor LesleyMartin

said: “The haulage companies know they can take a risk-free chance of driving through the vil- lage because they won’t be chal- lenged and theywon’t be fined. “There is no point in us sending

photos to the police because they do nothing about them.” Borough councillor Gill Fort

said: “Without sounding like a stuck record, we have got to see more action from the police. We need to issue big fines regularly and enforce them every time. Theywill soon get themessage.” Downs Mail has requested de-

tails of the number of tickets is- sued by Kent Police in the past 12 months.
