Maersk, Zim offer online street turn services

Global steamship carriers Maersk and Zim are now offering street turn services in the United States with Maersk also offering the service in Canada. The online platform is provided by Avantida an E2Open company. Empty container

triangulation, or the interchange of an intermodal container outside of a marine terminal or yard (street turns), is a well-known activity in the US. Avantida’s

platform

facilitates empty container triangulation, or the reuse of an import container for an export booking (street

turn).

By offering this on Avantida’s online platform, transporter and logistics companies are freed from the administrative hassle of having to request and process street turns manually. Through the automated request process offered by Maersk and Zim, dispatchers and planners requesting street turns get an accurate, reliable response

in a matter of minutes. So not only will they enjoy the time and cost savings of carrying out street turns, they will also benefit from a fully digital process and, undoubtedly, aid in reducing CO2 emissions as these efficiencies help cut unnecessary truck miles. The Avantida platform

is active in Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Lithuania, Scandinavia, Switzerland, the UK, and Mexico.

With it now also available in the United States and Canada, both shipping lines and transporters can optimize their planning. Overall, the platform counts

on over 4,000 registered companies and facilitates an average of 2,000 transactions a day.

“We are quickly gaining

traction in the US. The partnerships with Maersk and now ZIM reflect the market’s eagerness to embrace the Avantida platform,”

said Luc

De Clerck, CEO, Avantida. “We hope to soon offer the transport community in the US a central hub for requesting optimizations to all major shipping lines.”

CEIV Fresh: another world first for Hactl

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) has become one of the first two cargo handling agents in the world to achieve the new IATA CEIV Fresh accreditation, as part of an Airport Authority Hong Kong initiative to make the airport the world’s first CEIV Fresh hub. Hactl was presented with its certificate at IATA’s World Cargo Symposium in Singapore. Hactl began preparations

for IATA CEIV Fresh in October 2018, with key staff undergoing training by IATA in November, and the company making several refinements to its terminal and processes. Assessment and validation were then carried out in December 2018 and January 2019 respectively. Hactl created a new, fast-track

“Fresh Lane” through its handling processes, designed to create

an organized and structured journey through its facility, and so minimize the time taken to unload perishable cargo and either release it to customers, or place it in temperature-controlled storage. The Fresh Lane is modelled on Hactl’s highly- successful “Golden Route”, which was introduced for the expedited handling of pharmaceuticals in 2013 and won it the first WHO GDP and IATA CEIV Pharma accreditations in Hong Kong. Hactl’s new perishables

handling procedures are based around the “HACCP” (Hazard Analysis

and Critical Control

Points) concept, which identifies and deals with potential threats to perishables safety. The over-riding aim of HACCP is to minimise the amount of perishables cargo which becomes unfit for

DB Schenker launches Direct Express from ORD to SYD

DB Schenker has launched Direct Express – Australia, a time-definite,

airport-to-airport,

scheduled air cargo service from Chicago, IL (ORD) to Sydney, Australia (SYD). This new service is designed to offer shippers in the Midwest, the fastest, most reliable air cargo service to Australia and is ideally suited for any industry where reliability and speed of delivery are essential to managing their

supply chains. “We are very excited about

our new service down under,” said Chad Heller, DB Schenker’s Chief Commercial Officer in the U.S. “The US is Australia’s third largest trading partner and represents a significant portion of imports to the country. A large portion of these imports include the automotive, pharmaceutical and industrial manufacturing industries, many of which are

consumption during transit. Hactl identified four such

Critical Control Points within its operations, which have been successfully dealt with through, for example, the use of thermal dollies to maintain optimum temperatures. Among other upgrades are the segregation of different perishable commodities through dedicated truck docks, and the mapping and visual marking of optimum storage positions in its cool rooms (its so-called “Blue Belt”). Dedicated

located in the Midwest. With speed-to-market becoming more and more critical, our new Direct Express – Australia service is well positioned to meet this need,” he added. The service offers direct 777-

300 freighter service to Sydney, every Monday departing from Chicago. With a payload over 102 metric tons, the 777-F provides more capacity than any other twin-engine freighter as well as being one of the most energy- efficient and environmentally- friendly aircraſt effectively reducing carbon emissions as compared to most other aircraſt currently in service.

Port of Virginia completes cold treatment pilot

11 Following the successful

completion of the US Department of Agriculture’s Southeast

InTransit Cold

Treatment Pilot program, importers of perishables from South American countries can now move their cargo across The Port of Virginia®. “We’re the US East Coast’s

leading vegetable exporter, and this designation positions us to achieve the same success with imported fruit,” said John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority. “This is important for logistics and supply chain managers importing agricultural products because it means this cargo will get to its market more quickly.” The approval coincides with the port’s effort to expand its capacity to handle refrigerated (reefer) cargo. The port is investing a

combined $700 million to expand capacity at its two primary container terminals, Virginia International Gateway (VIG) and Norfolk International Terminals (NIT). The investment includes more room for refrigerated cargo at each terminal. “We’re expanding the stack-yard at VIG and reconfiguring the yard at NIT, and both of these projects include new reefer racks for each stack,” Reinhart said. “When construction is

Axle Logistics finds

service, performance solution

Knoxville, TN-based Axle Logistics is using the Descartes MacroPoint™ Capacity Matching solution, created by the Descartes Systems Group, to improve their ability to find new carriers and cover loads with lower costs, resulting in better customer service and increased operational performance. “Having the right tools and

technologies in place creates opportunities for us to further distinguish ourselves by the level of service we provide,” said Shawn McLeod, branch manager at Axle Logistics. “We already use Descartes MacroPoint™ for real-time visibility into shipment status, and the new capacity

matching solution is helping us to find carriers more quickly, build stronger relationships with existing carriers, and strategically expand our network with new carriers. The value of having access to this type of data on capacity offers an important competitive advantage that helps us move goods more productively through the supply chain.” The Descartes MacroPoint

Capacity Matching solution automatically matches open customer loads with available forwarding-looking capacity from its trusted carrier network by being able to combine historical load data with the

import center for refrigerated cargo.” The port also has the

capability to handle refrigerated cargo on the Richmond Express barge, which links the port’s terminals in the Norfolk Harbor to Richmond Marine Terminal (RMT) with thrice- weekly service. In 2017, the port invested in a 40-plug power unit for the barge. “There are users of RMT that use the barge to move reefer cargo, and interest in that service continues to grow,” Reinhart said. “The work we are doing in this area of business is helping to diversify our cargo mix and build a sustainable future for this port.” In October 2017, the port

began participating in the USDA’s pilot program that allowed imports of certain refrigerated fresh fruits from South America. Under the program, Virginia could import cold-treated containers of blueberries, citrus, and grapes from Peru; blueberries and grapes from Uruguay; and apples, blueberries, and pears from Argentina. The approval, which was distributed this week, is effective immediately.

from the customer’s network of carriers and the Descartes MacroPoint™ Capacity Co-op, an opt-in network where freight brokers can selectively choose to share unused capacity in a secure way to get significantly more access to capacity. The advanced visualization and capacity matching algorithms of the Descartes solution dramatically reduce the time to identify open loads and carriers. Part of the Descartes Global Logistics Network™ (Descartes GLN™), Descartes MacroPoint operates one of the industry’s largest visibility networks, which connects over one hundred thousand road carriers and more than four million trucking assets and drivers.
