BATTLING THE DREADED ORANGE PEEL SKIN
Renowned aesthetician DR CLAIRE OLIVER (BDS) looks at the different ways to tackle cellulite, from radio frequency to the latest FDA-approved treatment that can help banish it permanently.
Mention the word cellulite and there are very few women who will tell you they don’t have it somewhere on their body. In fact, more than 90% of us experience the tell-tale dimpled appearance, specifically on our thighs and buttocks, and as we all know once you have it no amount of gym work-outs and healthy meals is going to shift it.
In moderate cases, new innovations in radio frequency (RF) can prove beneficial. Endor Celltense care serum, for example, is used with aesthetic RF treatments to improve skin firmness and the appearance of cellulite; it involves deep, controlled heating of the fatty layers under the skin to help increases blood circulation and drain fatty deposits.

The non-invasive VelaShape treatment also uses RF to help penetrate and shrink fat cells by temporarily perforating their membranes. It combines radio frequency waves, infrared light, and vacuum suction to increase collagen production, which in turn tightens and smoothes skin to help soften the appearance of cellulite for up to a few months.
While it’s true that the exact cause of cellulite is unknown, hormones, diet, age, skin thickness, gender and the distribution of body fat certainly all play their part. The Medical fraternity believe it to be a result of the interaction between the connective tissue in the dermatological layer below the surface of the skin and the layer of fat just below it, forcing fat deposits to push through the connective tissue creating a bumpy texture.
Because women tend to carry more fat, particularly around their hips and thighs, they are more like to suffer from cellulite than men. There’s a simple biological explanation for this: Men’s fat chambers are like scaffolding and are more supportive which leads to less sagging.
HOW CAN YOU MINIMISE THE APPEARANCE OF CELLULITE? Cellulite is classified into three different types – mild, moderate and heavy – and there are a variety of treatments available depending on the severity.
For those with very mild dimpling, a salon body wrap – where a combination of skincare products are applied to the area before being wrapped in a thermal blanket – can have a very short term effect, so is ideal for a special occasion; you may also find specific cellulite creams may show a slight improvement (a recent study by the Mayo Clinic suggested a twice-daily application of a 0.30% retinol cream over six months).

THE LATEST ADVANCES IN AESTHETIC SCIENCE However, for those with heavy dimpled cellulite I recommend Cellfina®, the only FDA-cleared, one-time treatment that combines a proven approach with proprietary technology to improve the appearance of cellulite. This innovative treatment is showing clinical results for at least three years. It works by treating the primary structural cause – the connective bands woven throughout fat in the thighs and but- tocks – and clinical studies show patients experienced significant improvement in just two weeks, and after three years an impressive 93% said were still satisfied with the outcome.
The great news with the Cellfina® System is no surgery is involved; instead the procedure relies on a small needle-sized device to treat the cellulite-causing bands just beneath the surface of the skin. What’s more, the treatment itself takes less than an hour.
