POLICE instigated swingeing powers as part of a 48-hour blitz to deter troublemakers in Snod- land. Officers executed a dispersal

order in the town, which gave them authority to break up groups suspected of antisocial be- haviour. The action, part of a raft of

measures considered by crime chiefs following complaints from residents, came into effect on the first weekend in February. It saw officersmove against anyone they believed could cause harassment, alarm or distress to the wider public. Police Sergeant Jon Turtle, of

the Tonbridge andMalling Com- munity Safety Unit, said: “Be- tween Friday, February 1 and February 3, we instigated a dis- persal order in the centre of Snod- land and this tactic, along with others, will be used again in re- sponse to issues raised by resi- dents.” One grandmother told Downs

Mail she is afraid to leave her home at night, after yobs targeted her street. The 67-year-old,who asked not

to be named for fear of reprisals, said: “I sit in the darkwith the TV switched off and read my books by torchlight in the hope they don’t know I’m in. If they think I’m around, they bang on the door and window, and shout threats. “I came to Snodland for my re- tirement and my neighbours are

great, but now I just want to leave.” She told how youths had fol-

lowed her to a shop, shouting abuse, andwaited outside for her to leave. She was escorted home by staff. Sgt Turtle said police were

aware of reports of antisocial be- haviour in the town, including complaints around noise and youths on bikes causing a nui- sance during the evenings. “While Snodland remains a safe

place, I am determined to keep it that way and will take propor- tionate action to deter the small minority of people who misbe- have and affect the quality of life of the community,” he claimed. “It is essential that my officers

are provided with the most accu- rate picture possible, and anyone experiencing antisocial behaviour is encouraged to report it to Kent Police, either by calling 101 or through the Kent Policewebsite.”
