Local plan submied with24hours tospare
THE borough’s “blueprint” for future development has been submitted to the Secretary of State for approval. The move is expected to be the
final stage of protracted negotia- tions todeliver adevelopmentplan for Tonbridge andMalling for the next 12 years. The Local Plan began taking
shape inMarch 2012, andidentifies sites for 13,920 more homes; new business and community facilities such as schools, surgeries, roads and open spaces, to 2031. The
consultation process
prompted some 20,000 responses fromresidents, all ofwhichwill be considered by a planning inspec- tor, alongside the Local Plan and supporting documents. Details of the planning inspec-
tor’s appointment and a timetable for consideration are expected to be announced by the Secretary of Statewithin the next threeweeks.
HowardRogers,TMBC’s cabinet
member for strategicplanning and infrastructure, acknowledged the work that hadgone into theprepa- ration of the Local Plan and the public’s involvement. He thanked both staff andresidents for sharing their views and giving advice. He said: “TheLocalPlanis anex-
tremely important strategic docu- ment and, once adopted, will provide a robust basis formeeting development needs and the essen-
tials for keeping Tonbridge and Malling a great place to live.” KCC CllrTrudyDean (pictured)
congratulated the borough council on getting its Local Plan in a day ahead of the January 24 deadline. She is also pleased the borough council is pushing to extend the green belt to include areas between Kings Hill and West and East Malling, Leybourne and Larkfield. Had the borough council failed
tomeet thedeadline, itwouldhave faced a 23% increase in housing numbers as a penalty. Cllr Dean said: “It is outrageous
to be putting pressure on councils to comply in thisway, particularly in the South East, on what are al- ready very high housing numbers. The Government is mistaken to think the only way to bring down house prices is to buildmore.” Adoption of the Local Plan is ex-
pected “early in 2020”, according to a council spokesman.
