46/ FEBRUARY 2019 THE RIDER Battle of the Breeds at The Royal Just the simple sentence cre-
ates a sense of majesty, strength and competition. This event, re- cently held during the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, did not disappoint exhibitors and specta- tors alike. The Coliseum was full for this event, with sold out seats on the Saturday of the champi- onship. For those unfamiliar with
the Battle of the Breeds, this af- fair is a competitive promotion of the Saddle Seat discipline and the horse breeds it includes. It is made up of a series of three classes and one championship. This past November, the Battle of the Breeds was held over three days, with one class being held on Thursday, one of Friday, and the remaining two on Saturday. Melissa Moore was the judge. Each class was judged and placed separately from the other classes, and pinnings weren’t cumulative. Several of the core saddle
seat breeds, encompassing the disciplines of Park, Three-gaited, English Pleasure, Classic Pleas- ure and more, filled the classes. There were Arabians, Saddle- breds, Friesians, a Hackney and a Morgan represented. Each class consisted of walk, trot and canter, and though that description alone sounds like a common flat class, the Battle of the Breeds proved to be far from dull. Spectators in the stands got into the mood and cheered the horses on enthusias- tically from the stands. In the first class, on Thurs-
day, November 9, Maximum Ve- locity (Morgan), owned by Jessica Mann Baker and ridden
by Miller Young Fina, won the class. They were followed by Reedann’s What A Looker (American Saddlebred, ASB), who is owned and ridden by Na- talie Martens. Third place saw owner-rider Rachel Breen and her horse MBA’s Cary’s Sure Wil (ASB)l take the ribbon. The second class, held on
Friday, saw Reedann’s What a Looker
(ASB) and Natalie
Martens take home the red rib- bon, followed by rider Laura Rodel and Supreme Glamor CRF (Arabian) taking second place for owner Annie Glomski. Third place was awarded to CH The Bluesmaster (ASB), owned and ridden by Patrick McMurtrie. In the afternoon class on
Saturday, when the third class was pinned, Detmar K (Fresian) and Kimberley Blease were awarded first place. Second place was earned by Gossip Girl (Ara- bian) and Lei-han Hong, with third place being given to Kreme Dela Kreme (Arabian) and Kath- leen D’Auria. Finally, the evening champi-
onship (Stake) class was held and pinned. Maximum Velocity (Morgan), with Millar Young Fina, won the class and took the victory pass. Reedann’s What A Looker (ASB), with Natalie Martens, brought home Reserve Champion and Supreme Glamor CRF (ASB), with Annie Glom- ski, took home the third. A standing ovation to all

competitors, trainers and grooms who rode and showcased their mounts and discipline. The Bat- tle of the Breeds is more than just a brilliant example of Saddle
Seat and of the many breeds ca- pable of this discipline. The Bat- tle of the Breeds also showcases the bond we have with our horses. Being in the ring at such
a show is the final product of hard work, trust and love for the horse and what we do.
