FEBRUARY 2019 THE RIDER /33

Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week - Horse Day

Jan 6th 2019, Elmwood Community Centre or Via Live Streaming GBFW19 Horse Day was an amazing day filled with great education, inspiration, and

networking with like minded horse enthusiasts and businesses. Due in part to the phenomenal winter weather, the attendance was stronger than it had been in a few years. The day was also being viewed online by live streaming ticket holders. The speaker roster for the day was diverse and extremely entertaining and informative.

Starting the day was Shawn Hamilton, owner of CLiX Photography. She took the audience on a 45 minute world tour as she presented, The Adventures of a Riding Junkie. Shawn shared memorable, humorous and adventurous moments as she showed the audience photos that she had taken from her saddle. Next up was Rob Fera, Animal Health Specialist from Animal Pro Products. He drilled down on all of the details of Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Di- gestive Supplements for Horses. Ellie Ross, Director of Animal Behaviour and Applied Training, Wag and Train Inc., was the next presenter. Her topic was Equine Cognitive Psy- chology - How Do Horses Learn? Ellie helped the audience understand how horses learn, why they respond the way they do; what is anxiety; how to overcome fear; how to teach horses to make good choices; and how to gain and build trust. The next presenter was Cindy Fuerth, founder of the County Mounties. She joined us via video conference due to illness. She provided insight about De-Spooking Horses Using the Mounted Patrol Methods. After the break, the audience was divided into two, and each group got an opportunity to be a part of two demos/presentations. Upstairs they joined Dr. Mary Baks from the Walkerton Equine Clinic. She pro- vided the audience with the knowledge and confidence to make critical decisions in emergency situations, while she presented, First Aid for Horses - What We Need to Know. Meanwhile, on the lower level of the Community Centre, Lawrence (Chuck) Cannon, Retired Soldier, Privateer, Adventurer, and his as- sistants, shared their horse packing skills. They provided a basic hands on in- troduction to the pack saddle, pack boxes, tying a diamond hitch on the pack saddle, and tying/using the basket hitch on a trail saddle to transport their gear on their horse camping expedition. Overall GBFW Horse day was a fantastic event! This is an annual event,

so please mark Sunday, January 5th, 2020 on your calendars. We hope to see you then! Remember, if you live further afield, please join us via live streaming. Those tickets, and more information can be found at www.gbfw.ca.
