LIVE 24-SEVEN BEV BEVAN'S

CD PICKS - FEBRUARY 2019 Ben Folds – Brick: The Songs of Ben Folds 1994 - 2012 (Demon)

Benjamin Scott Folds was born in 1966 in Winston Salem, North Carolina and grew up to become one of America’s most respected singer/songwriters, keyboardists and producers. Between 1994 and 2000 he was frontman and keyboardist with Ben Folds Five and following their break-up he pursued a successful solo career, touring the world, however the band reunited in 2011 and they still regularly perform to this day, mainly in the USA.

This superbly packaged CD box set contains a mind-boggling 192 tracks across 13 CDs. The collection includes all of the Ben Folds Five studio albums and Ben Folds’ solo studio albums, released between 1994 and 2012. In addition there are live albums, bonus tracks, B-sides and rarities, plus a concise 60-page booklet featuring photos and a new interview. This is an impressive package.

R&B Anthem (Sony Music)

Discover 60 massive anthem tracks on a three-CD compilation, featuring some of the biggest names, old and new, from the world of R&B.

CD One includes Rock Your Body (Justin Timberlake); A Deeper Love (Aretha Franklin); U Remind me (Usher); 7 Days (Craig David); and Hips Don’t Lie (Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean).

110

CD 2 features Empire State Of Mind (Alicia Keys); Unbreak My Heart (Toni Braxton); I’m A Slave 4 U (Britney Spears); I Believe I Can Fly (R Kelly); and Ordinary People (John Legend).

On CD Three more ‘vintage’ tracks include, Sexual Healing (Marvin Gaye); Never Too Much (Luther Vandross); Living In America (James Brown and The Famous Flames); Move Closer (Phyllis Nelson); and State Of Independence by Donna Summer. This set is fabulous value.

Jon Savage’s 1968 – The Year The World Burned (Ace)

Another double-CD release in author/journalist Jon Savage’s excellent series of sixties’ compilations. 1968 was a turbulent year with the futility of the Vietnam War, the Paris student riots, Enoch Powell’s Rivers Of Blood speech and the rising popularity of feminism and the Civil Rights Movement in the USA. Many of the tracks here are chosen to reflect those happenings 50 years ago.

Highlights include Classical Gas (Mason Williams); Fire (The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown (featuring B’ham’s Carl Palmer on drums)); Hard To Handle (Otis Redding); I Say A Little Prayer (Aretha Franklin); Piece Of My Heart (Big Brother and the Holding Company); Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf ); Cloud Nine (The Temptations); Everyday People (Sly and the Family Stone); and Lord Of The Manor (Everly Brothers). There’s also Omnibus (a B-side from my old band The Move) and Sunshine Help Me by Spooky Tooth, which we covered on our Somethin’ Else from The Move EP, recorded live at London’s legendary Marquee Club In 1968.

Car Songs – The Anthems (Sony Music / Crimson)

Enjoy 80 massive hits to sing out loud in your car on this great value four-CD collection. Far too many songs to list, but here’s ten of my personal faves: I Drove All Night (Cindi Lauper); All The Young Dudes (Mott The Hoople); Drops Of Jupiter (Train); Torn (Natalie Imbruglia); Proud (Heather Small); Eternal Flame (The Bangles); Promise Me (Beverley Craven); Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry); Days (Kirsty McColl); and Jolene (Dolly Parton).
