Car debris in litter pick

A TEAMof villagers in Leeds teamed up on January 19 to pick litter from the footpaths, verges and hedgerows. The 12 pickers filled 31 sacks – the highest number ever – as well as

a couple of tyres. Added to the haul was an ever-growing amount of plastic car body parts, blamed on growing traffic numbers. A spokesman for the group said: “It is a sad fact that each time we

come out, we get even more bits of bumpers, smashed light casings, hub caps and wingmirror bits. Most of those belong to villagers whose cars are being hit almost daily.”

Mote looks to formrecovery

MAIDSTONE’S top cricket club, TheMote, is working on a quick recovery after a shock when its top three Saturday league teams were relegated last season. This has already resulted in the

selection of three new captains, a coach, a talented overseas all- rounder, and a player recruitment drive. The club has a proud Kent

League record, with several cham- pionships. Recently, the 1st XI twice fell just short of regaining premier division status, but last season stalled seriously, with rele- gation toDivision 2. ”The target nowis an immediate

promotion back to DivisionOne,” saidchairman andopening bowler Glen Aukett. New first team cap- tain is top order batsman James Marriott, who returns after miss- ing last season with a knee injury and will look to add to the 5,000 runs he has scored for the club. Other new captains are all-

rounderLewis Bone (2nds) and re- tired 1st teamer James Hodgson (3rds). Leading all-rounder Matt White has committed himself again to the club and batsman Chris Back will return after miss- ing last season.

Newoverseas player is success-

ful left-arm spinner and middle- order batsman Matt Luksich (22). He is a premier league player in KwaZulu,Natal, and a coach. Senior club coachwill be former

playerDavid Josephwho has been workingwithKentCountyCricket Club, heading the juniors.Hewill workwith the 1st XI on Saturdays but have an overall view of the playing side to ensure it reaches full potential. This kicks offwithwinter nets at

Cornwallis Academy on Sunday, January 27 (10am-noon) and runs to March 31, when outdoor nets start at the Willow Way ground. The recruitment drive is backed by a Maidstone mailing for senior players for four Saturday teams, Sunday and mid-week cricket (Marriott-james@sky.com) and for the successful 150-strong colts sec- tion (nickaldrich@gmail.com). “With a successful new

groundsman HowardWaters, the wickets are now rated among the best in the Kent League,” saidMr Aukett. “The club is sounder than it has been for very many years – andwemust nowensure this is re- flected with playing success as well.”
