Pond planned as a rest stop for newts
PLANNING chiefs are consider- ing proposals to use agricultural land as part of a cross-county highway…for amphibians. Environmentalistswant to create
a chain of ponds as resting places forwandering great crestednewts. Land at Anchor Farm, off
Rochester Road, Aylesford, has been earmarked as a possible site, and conservationists have lodged planswith Tonbridge andMalling Borough Council to excavate a 100sqm oval pond, 1.2 metres deep. The bid has been submitted by
The Medway Valley Countryside Partnership (MVCP) on behalf of Natural England. Andrew Rillie, of Anchor Farm,
said the not-for-profit environ- mental organisation had ap- proached himabout the project. He told Downs Mail: “We had
barn owls nesting on the farmand people fromthepartnershipwould
come down once a year tomonitor their young. They asked us out of the blue about the pond. They said theywant to create a series of them so that great crested newts can move through the valley between ponds. We saidwhy not? “We have a pondwith newts in,
sowe knowthey’re in the area.” The field is used mainly for
ponies. It is bounded by a stream, whichmakes it an ideal habitat for the amphibians. Great crested newts migrate at night from hibernation sites to
breeding ponds between February andApril, andback again between May andAugust. Their eggs, breeding sites and
resting places are all protected by law, and developers, industry and farmers need permission from Government body Natural Eng- land before disturbing them. Emily Seccombe, from MVCP,
filed theAylesford proposalswith borough planners. She said the pond would be part of a Natural Englandhabitatmitigation scheme for development elsewhere.

check what the public had sent to their offices and shops. The Salvation Army had re-
ceived dentures in a handbag and a live hedgehog in a duffel bag. Marie Curie received a second-
hand toilet seat, half-eaten Black Forest gateau, false teeth, glass eyes and dog nappies. And Waging Peace got a large,
rawfish in a plastic bag. Andrew Vale, from mental
health charity Mind, said: “We’re always very grateful to those who make donations toMind shops. “Therehave beensomemoreun-
usual donations, such as a live hand grenade and a voodoo kit, which are impossible or inappro- priate to put on sale. “Although the saying goes ‘it’s
the thought that counts’,we have a much better chance of benefitting from donations when they are practical and in good condition.”
