Flood team’s call for help

GOVERNMENT environment specialists are searching for can- didates to help defend communi- ties fromflooding. The Environment Agency

needs a new independent mem- ber of the Regional Flood and CoastalCommittee (RFCC)which covers Kent, and it believes a reader living orworking near the riversMedway, Loose, Len, Beult or Teise could hold the answer. The committees, spread across

England, rule on local priorities for flood risk management, with members playing a crucial role in overseeing projects in areas vul- nerable to flooding. The position is voluntary.

Members are appointed as impar- tial individuals in their own right, not as representatives of any par- ticular organisation. And commit- tees are handpicked to represent the communities they serve. Simon Moody, from the Envi-

ronmentAgency, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to support all the authorities involved in dealing with flooding and to make a real difference. Members help create partnerships that fund and deliver projects for commu- nities at risk of the devastating ef- fects of flooding.” The successful applicant would

be expectedto attendfour commit- teemeetings each year andwould, in addition to having an active in- terest in flood risk management, ideally have other skills they could bring to the role, like expertise in engineering, finance and account- ancy, assetmanagement, resilience and recovery, conservation, farm- ing or business. The closing date for applications

is Friday, January 18. For details or for an application pack, contact Jo Matthews at southernrfcc@envi- ronment-agency.gov.uk or call 0203 0257 124.

Some of the volunteers who took part in the charity sleepathon Fundraising lying down

FUNDRAISERS have hit on a novel way to raise money… staying in bed for the day. Ten supporters of Maidstone-

based charity, theWonderful Foun- dation, camped out in a furniture store at South Aylesford Retail Park for 24 hours in December. They were taking part in a cam-

paign to raise £5,000 to help pay for bedding at an orphanage in

Malawi, and at a winter shelter for the homeless inMaidstone. Fundraisers collected donations

and shook buckets during the “sleepathon” and, combined with online support, they have so far raised £2,500 towards their target. Readers who would like to back

the campaign can visit www.just- giving.com/campaign/bed-for- beds.
