MM Resolutions

New year, newyou!

When Oprah Winfrey uttered those immortal words ‘Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right!’ she was echoing what thousands of us are thinking at this time of year. Here’s how to make sure YOU get it right…

Yes, it’s that time of year again when we write our resolutions and then either act on them decisively or…well…don’t!

Dear diary This year I will give myself a makeover/ completely change my appearance/lose five stone/run four miles a day/go to the gym every morning before work/make my own healthy lunches and dinners fresh every day/get eight hours’ sleep every night.

Sound familiar? Now, as humans, there’s no doubt that the start of a new year

gives us the opportunity to ‘start again’; the chance to break bad habits and start anew. The only problem is that we usually set ourselves either too many resolutions, or make them so challenging that they are often unattainable. The moment that we feel that we are failing, we tend to give up. The simple fact is though that we can be more successful by

That way we can see little improvements gradually happening and these small achievements can spur us on to challenging ourselves more, rather than deflating us at the outset. Here are four changes that you can make in 2019 to become your happiest – and healthiest – self!

• Establish a routine whereby you go to bed at the same time each night (even for a short time to get your body into the routine).

• Have a warm bath before you go to bed and a warm, milky drink (no alcohol – it may make you drop off, but it will also cause you to waken up once the alcohol goes out of your system).

Eat a rainbow! Regardless of what all of the food gurus say, you don’t need a complicated regime when it comes to your diet. Simply focus on the basics – fresh fruit and veg, whole grains, low-fat dairy and good quality meat and poultry – and try and cut down on salt and sugar. Aim to have your plate packed with as many ‘coloured’ foods as possible, such as red, yellow and green peppers, purple aubergine, yellow sweetcorn and red tomatoes. If you do want to follow a specific diet plan, then the

Mediterranean diet is a good option. The diet, which is based primarily on the eating habits of

southern European countries, is centred around plant foods, olive oil, fish, poultry, beans, and grains and is known to be low in trans fats, and free from refined oils and highly processed meats and
