THE 2018 PINK WAVE

executive insight

The 2018 elections resulted in a significant increase in the number of women elected to public office. The U.S. Congress will now include 121 female repre- sentatives, while 23 women will be serving in the U.S. Senate. In Iowa, Abby Finkenaur and Cindy Axne were elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and Kim Reynolds was elected to serve as Governor of the State, all firsts for Iowa. Ne- braska also has a history of women in office with Deb Fisher currently serving as a U.S. Senator and Virginia Smith formerly serving in the U.S. House of Representa- tives and Kay Orr serving as governor.

Twenty years ago the number of women serving in office was less than half of what it is today, even though women represented half of all voters. With more women in office we may start to see changes in the importance of certain issues. For exam- ple, women have traditionally been the primary caretaker so we may see a greater focus on family issues, such as healthcare and education. On a worldwide scale, women have proven to be more effective at reaching peace through negotiations, so I hope there will now be more of a willingness to work across the aisle and reduce the divisive contentiousness in the U.S. House and Senate.

IA & NE LEGISLATION

On another note, the 2019 Iowa and Nebraska legislative sessions have just be- gun. In Iowa, we are still working to resolve the issue of taxing equipment put into a rental fleet. In Nebraska, there are still some issues that need to be ironed out relating to sales tax policy on items shipped in and out of the state.

There also is the possibility of someone tossing a “Right to Modify” bill in the hopper in either state. We have worked hard to educate our members and legisla- tors on this issue, since it seems to come up repeatedly.

D.C. FLY-IN

The week of March 4, 2019 we will be sponsoring a Washington Fly-In together with other equipment dealer associations from across the country. This is always an informative trip, and we encourage all members to take advantage of this opportunity, especially if you have not already done so. INEDA does provide some funding for this trip for members who would like to participate.
