3. Emotional Wellness

Emotional wellness refers to being aware and in touch with one’s emotions, thoughts and feelings. Positive emotional wellness helps support a healthy mental state and well-being, and includes stress management, emotional intelligence and positive mental health habits (like meditation or mindfulness). Without positive emotional well-being, employees aren’t able to perform or feel their best at work.

4. Social Wellness

Social wellness is another commonly overlooked aspect of employee wellness. Strong work relationships and opportunities for social connection in the workplace are essential for employee job satisfaction, happiness and overall well-being. In fact, lonely employees are much more likely to feel disconnected from their jobs, which can lead to lower work performance.

BENEFITS OF A HEALTHY WORK ENVIRONMENT

While it can be hard to see the advantages of an em- ployee wellness program at first glance, healthy employ- ees bring a wide array of benefits to the businesses where they work, including:

l More productive employees – Studies suggest a healthy lifestyle correlates with increased productiv- ity. Workers will work harder if they are healthy and enjoy the work environment that surrounds them.

l Less office stress – Workplace stress should not be the norm. It leads to burnout, which can result in higher employee turnover.

l Fewer colds, flu and other illnesses – Healthy practic- es prevent illness, which means fewer sick days are taken. A fit and healthy work environment can lead to employees missing 18% to 32% fewer workdays, according to RAND research.

l Fewer office-related injuries – Taking a break to exer- cise or stretch can prevent common office injuries, resulting in fewer worker compensation claims.

l Health insurance savings – Most companies utilizing a workplace wellness program see a decrease in health costs and payouts for their employees.

l Increased job retention – Treating your employees well by offering benefits and a comprehensive wellness program gives them more incentive to stay.

l Happier employees – Wellness programs lead to happier employees. They increase satisfaction in the workplace, improve teamwork and communication, and foster greater job effectiveness.
