DECEMBER 2018 THE RIDER /29 Vanessa Creech-Terauds Awarded 2018 Orion Cup

Ottawa, ON, Nov. 7, 2018 – Equestrian Canada (EC) has awarded Vanessa Creech- Terauds of Caistor Centre, ON with the 2018 Orion Cup in recognition of her successful rise through the dressage levels. Presented to a prom-

ising dressage athlete in the process of

transitioning

from the Young Rider level to Grand Prix, the Orion Cup was created in memory of one of Canada’s most well-known equine dressage stars.

Open to Canadian

dressage riders aged 16 to 25, the award is presented to the rider with the highest av- erage of three scores from the Under 25 (U25) Grand Prix level. Scores obtained at CDI-level competitions receive a 1% bonus. The program encourages young athletes to focus on training and planning at an elite level, with tangible goals and confidence. earned the coveted title for 2018 after achieving a total qualifying average of 66.561% at the CDI-U25 level with Devon L (De

Niro 6 x Wolkenstein II), an 18-year-old Hanoverian gelding co-owned by Diane Creech

and

Leatherdale. “I am honoured to

have won the Orion Cup Award for 2018 with Devon L,” said Creech-Terauds. “Mrs. Leatherdale and I are so proud of Devon, who keeps proving to us that age is only a number. He has nothing to prove, and every- thing is only icing on top of his already great career. Devon is a strong competi- tor and still loves going into the ring! We had a great sea- son and are now looking forward to spending the winter in Florida.” Each of Creech-Ter- three qualifying

scores represented a first- place finish in their respec- tive CDI-U25 Grand Prix class: 65.231% on March 2 during the Adequan Global Dressage

Festival in

Wellington, FL; 66.325% on June 16 at the Cedar Valley CDI 3* in Cedar Valley, ON; and finally, 65.128% on Sept. 29 at the renowned Dressage at Devon in Devon, PA. With all scores

being earned at CDI-level competitions, Creech-Ter- auds was awarded a 1%

bonus per score. “Vanessa and Devon

L had a great 2018 season

together, and it has been re- ally beautiful to see their partnership grow,” said

Louise

Fortmuller, who established the Orion Cup in 2016. “Congratulations, Vanessa! You are a wonderful and very talented competitor and ambassador of our sport, and I am so excited to an- nounce that you and Devon L are the 2018 Orion Cup champions.” Orion (Jazz x Con-

sul), a 1996 Dutch Warm- blood gelding, was an Olympic Team horse for Canada and was trained to the advanced level by Fort- muller’s

former coach,

Leslie Reid, who rode Orion at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. In 2009, Fortmuller took over the ride on this in- credibly talented horse. The pair would go on to compete at the Grand Prix level, cul- minating with their selection as the reserve combination for

the London 2012

Olympic Games. Sadly, Orion died at the start of 2014. His passing was a devastating loss to Fort- muller and her family, as well as the Canadian Dres- sage Team. The Orion Cup pays

tribute to this very special horse. Just as Orion was in-

Green Meadows Coaching Keeps ‘Old Times’ Alive at Royal Horse Show

Toronto, Ontario – Mr. and Mrs. Harvey and Mary Waller of Stockbridge, MA, and their ‘Old Times’ coach claimed a third consecutive victory in the historic Green Meadows Four-In-Hand Coaching Appointments Class on Friday, November 9, at the Royal Horse Show, held as part of the 96th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON. “It never gets old!”

said Mary of the win on Fri- day night. “It’s always spe- cial. I love the Royal.” The Green Meadows

Coaching division, gener- ously

sponsored by

Hugessen Consulting, Inc., is dedicated to the great tra- dition of the road coaches and park drags of years gone

by, and the Waller’s ‘Old Times’ coach exemplifies a fine example of that tradi- tion.

The ‘Old Times’

coach was famously driven from London to Brighton, England, in the 1880s. It has since been conserved in its entirety by the Wallers, who purchased the road coach in 2001 and had the paint stripped down to find the original color and lettering, enabling it to be put back to its exact original appear- ance.

That attention to de-

tail is part of what helped the Waller’s earn the win in the Coaching Appointments Class, judged on perform- ance, presentation, and em- phasis on appointments. All

three factors were taken into consideration during Friday evening’s Green Meadows Four-In-Hand Coaching Ap- pointments Class in the Coca-Cola Coliseum, while the presentation and empha- sis on appointments were also judged during a special reception on Friday after- noon.

“This is a very special

coach, so it’s nice to bring it here to a special show,” said Mary. “The way they do the appointments in the other ring beforehand showcases the coaches. You get to see them in a special surround- ing, and it makes it that much nicer. All of our staff works so hard, so for them to see it in there after they’ve been working on it

Ottawa, ON, Nov. 27, 2018 – Canadian Show Jumping Team horse, Ole, passed away at the age of 22 on Nov. 23, 2018 fol- lowing a long and happy retire- ment.

Born in 1996, the Dutch

Warmblood gelding (Burggraaf x Dukaat) was an iconic horse for the Canadian Equestrian Team. With Canadian Olympian Mac Cone of King City, ON in the irons, Ole’s sto- ried career at the FEI level began in 2008 when he won the very first Grand Prix he’d ever entered at the renowned Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL. That same year, Ole en-

tered the history books, when he and Cone travelled to the Beijing Olympics and helped the Canadian Show Jumping Team bring home the silver medal, which marked Canada’s first show jumping team medal since 1968. Ole’s momentum con-

tinued the next year, when he

for days – and then to have us win – it’s really more for them than for us because it’s our whole team that has ac- complished this!” This year, the Wallers also had three special guests as part of their winning team for the evening’s Coaching Appointments Class. Two- time Olympic and recent World Championship team gold medalist, McLain Ward, rode on ‘Old Times’ alongside his wife, Lauren, and their

daughter, Lilly. We’ve

three-year-old known

McLain forever, and he’s probably ridden with us three or four times here at The Royal,” said Mary. “Lilly was bracketed by mom and dad holding her in

and Cone earned the 2009 Canadian Show Jumping Championships at the Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON. The duo enjoyed the title after winning both rounds of the Championship to lead from start to finish. In addition, Ole and

Cone represented the maple leaf on multiple occasions in the FEI Nations Cup series, and helped Canada win the 2010 CSIO 4* Nations Cup in Wellington, FL. Equestrian Canada (EC)

extends sincere condolences to Cone, owners, Sara Houstoun and Larry Evoy, groom, Do- minique Maida, and the entire team behind Ole. Equestrian Canada ex-

tends sincere condolences to the entire team behind Ole, an iconic Olympic horse for the Canadian Show Jumping Team who passed away at the age of 22 on Nov. 23, 2018 following a long and happy retirement.

strumental to the start of Fortmuller’s Grand Prix ca- reer, this award provides other talented Canadian dressage athletes with a leg- up in the sport. “What is very special

about this year’s winners is that Devon L shares a unique connection to Orion, as these two horses were once Olympic teammates,” explained

Fortmuller.

“Devon L was on the Lon- don 2012 Olympic team with Vanessa’s mother, Diane Creech, which is the same year Orion and I were also on the team. It is so wonderful

to see how

Devon L is helping Vanessa launch her Grand Prix ca- reer in the same way Orion did for me.” Creech-Terauds con-

cluded, “I would like to thank Pia Fortmuller for sponsoring this award and we are proud to be a part of keeping Orion’s memory alive.”
