The Quarter Racing
Owners of Ontario Inc. Board of Directors at their meeting on September 15, 2018 voted to bring back the Ontario Bred series of Stakes races for the 2019 racing season. After the American Quarter Horse As- sociation removed the re- gional qualifier races for the Bank of American racing challenge in 2018 the QROOI board saw an opportunity to put back a program that sup- ports breeding of Ontario
mares without any require- ments on the location of the stallions. The 2019 Stakes program will have a total of 10 stakes, 3 Ontario Bred, 3 Ontario Sired, 3 Open Stakes along with the Alex Picov Championship race. If you have any ques-

AJAX DOWNS, OCTOBER 15, 2018 - In one of the most exciting renewals of the $88,200 Picov Derby, part of a big, nine-race day at Ajax Downs, HAD TO BE IVORY would not be denied in the top race for 3-year-old Quarter Horses on Oct. 15. The Ontario-bred, facing a super
field of nine other sophomores including five from the powerful Jason Pascoe- trained stable, held off Carneros to win the 400-yard stakes race by a neck for his eighth career win in nine starts. Under jockey Tony Phillips, Had to Be Ivory sped the distance in :20.110 for a 96 Speed Index. Had to Be Ivory was making just
his fourth start in 2018 following his un- beaten juvenile campaign. He won the Ajax Bonus Derby in June and then fin- ished second in his only meeting against two-time Horse of the Year Country Boy 123 in an August allowance race. He won his Picov Derby trial on Oct. 1 de-
spite losing a show early in the race. “He knows how to win but even
now I think he’s still learning,” said Phillips. “He hasn’t have many races this year but the few that he had he has done well. Even the Country Boy race he wasn’t quite fit enough enough but they broke the track record that day.” Trainer Bryn Robertson said Had
to Be Ivory was a bit more settled on Derby day. “Last race in the Trial he come out
a bit crooked and caught himself and cut his leg, pulled his shoe, He was sore for a couple of days. He still managed to win that day. “He’s been working really and
today he was a gentleman. We were worried about the gate but he was good, ran great and we’re just proud of him.” Had to Be Ivory, one of just two
Ontario-breds in the field, is owned and was bred by Bryn’s wife Carol and daughter-in-law Jaime Robertson of
Hillsburgh, ON. Bryn and Carol’s son Mike is the blacksmith for the family’s horse as well as outrider and Zac Kennedy groomed and ran the big geld- ing.
Had to Be Ivory is a son of Ivory
James from the Robertson’s stakes win- ner mare Had to Be Fandago by Hadto- benuts. Milena Kwicien’s Carneros,
trained by Pascoe, completed his ultra- consistently good season with his run- ner-up finish. The Oklahoma-bred by Prospect to the Top was second to Had to Be Ivory in the Bonus Derby and has won four races from his nine starts in 2018.
Kwiecien’s A J Chick in 15 fin-
ished third and the three-year-old filly was making her stakes debut. Monday’s racing card also in-
cluded the final of the popular $3,500 Handicapping Championship, won this year by Carl Vickers who took home the
$2,000 first-place prize. Ajax Downs had a special guest on Monday as Durham News sports direc-
tor ROB SNOEK, a three-time Para- lympian, called his first horse race, race 2 at Ajax Downs and he nailed it.
TORONTO, November 13 – As part of its mandate as agreed to with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation through the Long Term Funding Agree- ment, Ontario Racing (OR) will assume management of the Thoroughbred Horse Improvement Program. OR, who annu- ally directs the Horse Improvement Pro- gram (HIP) in support of the province’s horse racing industry, will commence administration of the Thoroughbred Horse Improvement Program (TIP) for the 2019-20 season. Ontario Racing currently adminis-
Ontario Racing to administer Thoroughbred Horse Improvement Program “Ontario Racing is streamlining its
ters the Standardbred and Quarter Horse HIP Programs but had previously con- tracted out administration of the TIP program to the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS).
Horse Improvement Program operations to bring stability to the TIP program, al- lowing for greater transparency and stronger administration of the purse fund for the entire horse racing industry,” said Katherine Curry, Executive Director, Ontario Racing. “Ontario Racing has substantial expertise in overseeing this type of initiative and it has been deter- mined that it is in the best interests of the province’s horse racing industry to bring the administration of the Thoroughbred Horse Improvement Program back under OR’s full sponsorship. The change has been ratified by Ontario Rac- ing’s Board of Directors indicating the industry’s full support.” Ontario Racing represents over
95% of the horse racing industry, across all levels of racing and breeding of race- horses in Ontario, including representa- tion by racetracks and horsepeople’s associations. The HIP program was created by
government to support the Ontario horse racing industry and its administration under the purview of its industry associ- ation and as such, subject to a high level of transparency and reporting. Administration of the HIP pro-
grams forms a substantial part of On- tario Racing’s mandate. HIP requires a total industry perspective on perform- ance indicators including various quality and quantity metrics. The investment should be evaluated in light of the over- all effect on the entire Ontario racing
program. Direct administration will also allow the HIP program to be evaluated against comparable industry programs in other jurisdictions. “Ontario Racing has administered
the HIP programs for the Standardbred and Quarter Horse breeds of our indus- try with great success,” said Bob Broad- stock, President of Quarter Racing Owners of Ontario Inc. “OR’s manage- ment team will offer similar innovative financial and technological solutions to the Thoroughbred Horse Improvement Program that will be cost effective and will balance and further the interests of the Ontario’s entire horse racing busi- ness.” Affairs and allocations of the full Horse Improvement Program, including
