Orders are plotted on a google map and appear as pins. Officers click on the pins to obtain information about the watch order and periodically visit these locations as time permits. Watch Orders automatically disappear from the map to an archive folder at preset dates. As of this writing there were 65 active watch orders pinned to the map, which offers satellite imagery too.
The future commitment of Florida International University Professor Masoud Sadjadi, PHD includes assigning incoming seniors to this project, add new features and provide software support to address any computer bugs found in the application. This was also the case with a 2014 project developed in partnership with Pine- crest PD and FIU. That project is a web-based BOLO flier solution for which Pinecrest PD received the FPCAs Rocky Pomerance Award for innovation and excellence. The FPCA’s award highlighted the significance of the cooperative partnership between a University and Law Enforcement.
The Pinecrest Police Department first partnered with Florida International University in 2014 to develop a digital solution that dramatically improves the BOLO, which is an important aspect of interdepartmental in- formation sharing. Florida International University, and in particular Professor Masoud Sadjadi, made a sig- nificant investment by assigning FIU computer science students to senior capstone projects each semester to move the Virtual Roll Call Briefing project from development to production; in the same manner as with the web-based BOLO flier application, which is now an initiative of the Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police. Because of FIU's significant investment, BOLO fliers in Miami-Dade may soon be created, dissemi- nated, and shared across jurisdictions in real-time from a desktop computer, mobile data terminal, computer tablet or smart phone.
The IACP award application posed this final question. “Does the project have potential for longevity and rep- lication.” I answered by restating the question. “Is there a potential for establishing partnerships between other police departments and universities? Absolutely.” My answer was based on experience with college students the past four years who have demonstrated a passion for using their acquired computer science talents for the greater good. Pinecrest PD anticipates a continued relationship with FIU to support project improvement as has been the case since 2014.
