About Dame Kelly Holmes

Dame Kelly is known to most for her Double Gold win, in the 800 m and 1,500 m, at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. She became the first British woman to achieve this feat, the culmination of years of perseverance and determination in pursuit of her dream. Later in the same year she was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Kelly was raised by her mum on a council estate in Kent. She attended the local secondary school where, due to the belief and support of her PE teacher, she pursued her talent at running. Ferried to race meetings up and down the country by her family in their clapped-out old bangers, she knows the importance of having a supportive team. Having left professional running to pursue her army career, she could never shift the dream of Olympic gold and returned to running in 1997. Her running career was overshadowed with

repeated injury and disappointment. Recurring physical injuries contributed to periods of clinical depression and self-harm that continued to affect her just one year before her Olympic double.
