BECCLES U3A

ADRIAN Brown, a British conductor with an outstanding international

reputation

gave a fascinating talk about his career in music at the September U3A meeting. Educated at Northgate Grammar School for Boys, Ipswich, after graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, he studied intensively with Sir Adrian Boult. He hails from a musical family and his mother said that she thought he had been vaccinated with a gramophone needle. The following are just a few

of his achievements: 1972 was appointed Music Director of Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra, from which he stood down in 2013 after 40 years. 1989 received the Novello Award for Youth Orchestras at the Edinburgh Festival, where he was conducting the Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra. 1992 went to Russia to conduct the St Petersburg

Philharmonic

Orchestra. 1996 went to Japan to work with the Toyama Toho Academy Orchestra. 1998 Sir Roger Norrington invited Brown to conduct the Camerata

Salzburg. 2002 was presented with an award by Classic FM at their Tenth Birthday Honours Celebration. 2005 was invited to join the panel of jury members for Music for Youth. 2009 conducted the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra in Vilnius. Has conducted many British orchestras, including the City of Birmingham Symphony, the BBC Symphony, the BBC Scottish Symphony and the London Sinfonietta. His next concert is with the

Waveney Sinfonia whose aim is to provide an opportunity for local young people to play with more mature musicians in an orchestra under a professional baton. Based in Lowestoft they perform three times yearly. Next U3A meeting: Wed

21st November: Richard Hughes, Assembly House in Norwich – ‘A Career in the Hospitality Industry’. Held at Beccles Public Hall, doors open 9.45am for refreshments for 10.30am start. Members free. Visitors £2.50.

Beccles reaffirms the Twinning oath with Petit-Couronne

ON Sunday 7th October, in Petit-Couronne, Beccles Mayor Elfrede Brambley- Crawshaw, confirmed the Oath that was finalised in Beccles exactly 40 years earlier. Watch- ing her are Dominique Randon Mayor of Petit-Couronne, and Rainer Gobel Mayor of Ahlem, the German town that twinned with Petit-Couronne in 1967. 38 people from Beccles trav- elled to the small town, just south of Rouen, for the week- end, enjoying the hospitality of host families, sharing activities and promoting local produce at the towns autumn festival. Celebrating 50 years of their

Twinning with Petit-Couronne, 44 people from Ahlem also took part in the events enabling a truly international cultural exchange. Back home in Beccles, the bells rang a quarter peal of plain Bob Royal, to mark the occasion and this was trans- mitted live to Petit-Couronne during the afternoon. On Saturday 3rd November, those who went on the trip will be sharing some of their expe- riences over coffee and cake in Blyburgate Hall and invite you to join them from 3pm-5pm. - 2018. 14.16C (57F) - 2017. 15.12C (59F) - Average. Rainfall Total- 0.91" compared with 3.56" in September 2017. (30-Year Average 1.99"). (2018 Total- 46% of Average). Most Rainfall On One Day- 0.30" on 23rd. Wind Direction- mainly

from:- South-West 10 days, North-West 8 days, North 3 days, North-East 3 days, East 2 days and West 2 days. September overall was

a month of near average temperatures but somewhat drier than long-term average. Following the outstanding warmth of the summer months, September was on schedule to continue in much the same vein.

During the first twenty days, thirteen recorded 20C or more as Mean Temperature 1.5C above average compared with long term. However the last ten days saw only two further days exceed 21C as well as not only the coldest day of the month but also the coolest September day since 1994 (12.0C Maximum on 23rd). This period also included the coolest September nights since 2012 (4.0C Air Minimum on 24th and 28th). The first two thirds of the

month had been dominated by High Pressure positioned to draw in South-Westerly winds which had been warmed over sub tropical seas on a high number of days. In fact the remnants of ex tropical storms of “Helene” and “Brona” were probably indirectly the cause of the change to cooler conditions following the four warmest days and four of the five mildest nights. Maximums 16th to 19th inclusive were 23.5C, 25.0C, 24.0C and 24.5C). Despite Mean Temperature being 0.2C below long-term average this was the warmest September since 2016 us having endured a very poor comparable month last year which had seen the absolute Maximum Temperature for the whole month of only 21.3C.

The contrast with last September was also notable with regard to rainfall. This time the 0.91” total made this the driest September since 2011 and also the fourth very dry month during the last five in 2018 (only August wetter than average). Last September recorded 3.56” rainfall total which made it the wettest September since 2001. This September, notable

dry spells were noted during one rain day in twelve, 7th to 18th inclusive and seven consecutive, 24th to 30th inclusive. Of the nine days when rainfall was recorded, only three noted more than one tenth of an inch, while the wettest day, 0.30” on 23rd, was the coldest day also as previously reported. With three quarters of

2018 completed, 16.86” of rainfall has been recorded so far, still behind the expected amount compared with long- term average (25.60” is year's expectation). However there are the months of October, November and December to come, traditionally the three wettest on average, which may or may not change the pattern drastically.

Beccles Fun Run - The Results Are In!

THE first of what will become an annual Beccles Fun Run or- ganised by the Beccles & Dis- trict Lions Club has been hailed a success. Held on September 2nd with distances of three and five kilo- metres, plus a Children’s one kilometre, the runs made use of the unique Beccles Common and historic Avenue along with the Sports field, to provide what many participants described as one of the most attractive routes they have experienced. As a Fun Run there were no winners or losers, but over 60 people of all ages set their own targets - which many exceeded! It was a real family event, with Mums and Dads running along- side and encouraging their children in their endeavours. Sponsorship was common, with people choosing their own favourite causes. This year’s Beccles Lions President, Chris Lambert said “Right from the start we re- ceived great support from both

the Town and District Councils, who gave us permission to use the Town’s fantastic facilities. Local businesses as usual were quick to support us including Tesco, Roys, Larking Gowen, Harris & James, Crack Pet Shop, Sportslink, Blackwell Print and Charlotte James Pho- tography. Our sincere thanks go to them and a special mention for the many dog walkers on the Common, who found their normal Sunday stroll interrupt- ed - we had great co-operation from all.” The Fun Run, which was prompted by an idea from Past Lion President, Keith Moore, raised over £500 for the Club, which will be used for local community projects and will be repeated next year. Work- ing on this year’s experience the Club are looking to attract an even bigger field of runners by adding new features and the date for the 2019 event will be announced as soon as possible.

SOMETHING spooky is heading back to Beccles this Halloween. Beccles pumpkin festival is set to return on Sunday 28th October between 4pm and 8pm. This year the event will take place on the grassed area to the left of Beccles, Morrisons store. We would like to stress that the event will not be taking place on the car park. Morrisons Car park will be open for visitors to park. This year the money raised

from the event will be donated to Beccles Football club, who are raising funds for there new 3D pitch and new equipment. Also money raised will go to Beccles Mayor’s appeal 2018 which is to raise money for the new play equipment at Beccles Quay.

PAWS FOR A CAUSE: WAG FOR MENINGITIS

DOGS and their owners are taking the lead to help fight meningitis. The UK’s top meningitis

charity Meningitis Now has today launched its new pooch- friendly fundraiser Wag for Meningitis and you’d be barking to miss it. Four-legged friends can

Walk and Give (WAG) for the charity anytime, anywhere – all they need is you. From getting sponsored for a walk every day for 30 days, to getting involved in doggy challenges and canine capers, WAG for Meningitis is a brilliant way to include your pup in the fight against the deadly disease. Meningitis Now Community Fundraiser Leah Wynn explained that participants just needed to decide how to get involved, help their dog set up their JustGiving page, and guarantee raising a minimum of £30. Every dog that completes the challenge will be awarded their very own certificate of paw- ticipation. “Walking your pup is already

part of most dog-owners’ day, so this is an excellent way to raise money for a great cause at the same time,” Leah said. “If you can’t commit to doing 30 walks there are plenty of other ways you can join in – from baking doggy treats and setting up your own “barkery”, to throwing a puppy party for your dog’s canine pals. Just remember that every penny raised will be put towards fighting meningitis and supporting all of those who have been impacted by this terrible disease.” To make sure your four-

legged friend looks the part, you can also kit them out with a Meningitis Now branded bandana in the charity’s trademark bright orange. WAG was partly inspired by five-year-old lurcher Macey, who became the campaign’s mascot after herself fighting off meningitis. Rescue-dog Macey will be following the progress of the WAG walkers from her newly found forever home in Shropshire. Meningitis Now is working towards a future where no

one in the UK loses their life to meningitis and everyone affected gets the support they need. It does this by funding research into vaccines and prevention, raising awareness so people know what to look for and what action to take if they suspect meningitis and rebuilding futures by providing dedicated support to people living with the impact of the disease.
