LIVE 24-SEVEN - ANITA RANI
I tell you there was a real eureka moment this year when at the RTS I won the award for Best Presenter for my Partition programme. Not only was I the first woman to win it, but I was the first Asian presenter to win it. But it’s about opening the doors for other people and yes – keep going!
Talking about Partition, you co-produced that, was that the first time you were behind camera? Yes, I’m one of these people that’s got an idea a minute. So, there’re lots of things I’ve got going on and that was an idea I came up with after Who Do You Think You Are?
I loved that, my mum and I watch it religiously and we loved your programme; was Partition a progression from that? Yes, it was a follow up to that if you like because I didn’t get to see where my grandfather’s family had died and so few people knew about that piece of history, so that’s when I went to the BBC and said this is the programme I want to make, this is the idea, what do you think? I did the same with my Bollywood programme, so I co-pro- duced that show. So yes, it’s an interesting new string to my bow, coming up with ideas.
Let’s talk fashion! You are quoted as saying that clothes are a stressful part of being a female presenter, do you still feel the same way, as some leading ladies I have interviewed see them as a secret weapon – getting into a character?
I love clothes, I love style, style is really important to me, aesthetics are really important to me, so from what I’m wearing to how my house is decorated! I think the reason why I find it so stressful is because I do so much TV work it’s just something I have to think about all the time [laughing] so I still think it can be quite stressful, but it can also be great fun! To find clothes for my role on Countryfile – well that’s interesting… [laughing] I have my own ladies’ day at the polo every year and I’m usually in stilettos as I should have been born taller… [Laughing] …I have to wear wedges and I look around at the equestrian set and they just get their attire bang on! They have all the gear and I have no idea! [laughing] I know what you mean, when I started working Countryfile one of my mates said to me,
“Don’t get a Barbour now you’re working
Countryfile”! I said, “I live in East London, I’ve had a Barbour for years”. [laughing] But I’ve got a lot of outdoor gear in my wardrobe now and I love it – and it’s a great fun part of my job, it’s also stressful, but only in a fun way that I have to think about clothes all the time.
Sir David Attenborough is my ideal dinner guest – do you feel a little pressure with his association with the show? No, as he’s him and I’m not going to be him, it’s an honour to be associated with it – that’s what it is, an honour! He’s the natural planet isn’t he – he’s incredible, he’s Blue Planet, it’s just an honour to be associated with it – honestly.
