OPTIONAL SUBJECTS

INFORMATION AND CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY

BTEC Level 2 First Award

This is a demanding but stimulating course, primarily designed for people aged 14 – 19 who wish to explore a vocationally focused form of study. The BTEC Level 2 First Award in Information and Creative Technology will inspire and enthuse learners to become technology savvy – producers of technology products and systems and not just consumers. The course will give learners the opportunity to

gain a broad understanding and knowledge of the IT sector and some aspects of creative industries and will encourage personal development, motivation and confidence through practical participation and by giving learners responsibility for their own projects. How is the course assessed? There are two Core units (one of which is externally assessed) and two optional units. Most units are portfolio based and centred on real life scenarios. This is a level 2 qualification, and the certification may be achieved at L2 Pass, L2 Merit, L2 Distinction or L2 Distinction*

MEDIA GCSE Exam Board: AQA

GCSE Media Studies aims to help you to make sense of the impact of different media texts on us all – through exploring relatively new media such as ‘social media’ alongside more traditional media forms such as magazines and newspapers, film, TV and radio. It also gives you the opportunity to create your

own media products. This is a challenging and creative GCSE course with a practical element, which integrates theory and practice. Pupils taking this course will need to have a

keen interest in the media, a willingness to work as part of a team and an enthusiasm for practical, creative and analytical work. It is a course in which pupils will develop many valuable skills, including analysis, project management, self-evaluation and critical thinking, which will benefit their work in other subjects and equip them for higher level study or employment. Many students choose to continue with their media study in the Sixth Form. We currently offer a

2-year BTEC qualification in Creative Digital Media Production. How is the course assessed? At GCSE level marks are awarded for a completed independent media production, and through two end of course examinations. Production Assessment (marked in school): 30% of GCSE. The production work will enable students

to develop skills in the planning, production and evaluation of a new media text. Successful practical projects that students have undertaken in the past include magazine design, film trailers, radio programmes and web site design. Paper 1 Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes 35% of GCSE. Multiple choice/short answer questions and an extended response question assessing

knowledge. Questions will focus on three areas of the

theoretical framework: industries, audiences and representation. Section A will focus on industries and audiences whilst Section B will focus on representations. Paper 2 Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes 35% of GCSE. Multiple choice/short answer/stepped response

questions and an extended response question assessing in-depth knowledge of all elements of the media studies course. Questions will focus on media language and

contexts of the media. Students will be expected to analyse media products both in relation to the theoretical framework and their contexts. Section A will focus on language and Section B will focus on contexts. This qualification is linear: students will sit all their
