Lifting Gear Hire Upgrades Load Cell Fleet with Straightpoint


> Lifting equipment rental specialist Lifting Gear Hire (LGH) has initiated a major overhaul of its load cell fleet and placed a landmark order for manufacturer Straightpoint’s (SP) Radiolink plus units up to 220,000 lbs. in capacity. The order, the value of which is not


disclosed, will be delivered in a piecemeal fashion over a two-to-three-year period and will result in 23 LGH rental facilities in the U.S. and Canada stocking exclusively SP product. The Radiolink plus, which is the UK manufacturer’s top selling load cell, is capable of both weighing and dynamic load monitoring and is suited to a myriad of applications. LGH will take a variety of models, including


standard long-range (2,300 ft. or 700m) wireless versions and a number of Bluetooth units, predominantly for internal use. SP only recently updated its Bluetooth capability and launched an enhanced version of its popular app. The upgrade from Bluetooth 4.1 to 4.2 facilitated two standout improvements over the original version, namely increased range and the volume of smart devices that can be connected to a load cell. Tony Fiscelli, president at LGH, said:


“We always look for the best and most reliable product manufacturers; we feel SP falls directly in line with those high standards. Put simply, we feel they are the leader in the business sector they perform in. We look at both our vendors and customers as true partners. We value and cherish the relationships at all levels of our supply chain.” The switch to SP follows LGH’s use of its


wireless compression load cells, which offer the same range and cable-less benefits as the aforementioned Radiolink plus products. Additionally, LGH operations in mainland Europe and the UK have recently committed to SP’s range of force measurement products and reported on their robustness and suitability to rental applications. LGH, acknowledged that constant evolution of the SP range was a key factor in partnering with the manufacturer. David Ayling, director at SP, said: “Recognition of our commitment to innovation and customer-driven improvement from a rental powerhouse such as LGH is testament to our ongoing success in providing load cells that make end user applications safer, more efficient, and as accurate and technologically advanced as possible.”

Straightpoint (SP) Upgrades Bluetooth Offering, Relaunches Clamp On Line Tensionmeter


> Straightpoint (SP) has updated its Bluetooth capability and launched an enhanced version of its popular app, as the load cell manufacturer continues to pioneer technological advancement of force measurement in below-the-hook and other applications. Bluetooth-enabled SP equipment


includes its wireless load links, load shackles, and compression load cells, in addition to products from its running line tensionmeter range. The upgrade from Bluetooth 4.1 to 4.2 facilitates two standout improvements over the original version, namely increased range and the volume of smart devices that can be connected to a load cell. Previously, a load cell could use Bluetooth


(wireless technology for exchanging data over short distances) to communicate with one smartphone or device carrying the app up to 50m (164 ft.) away. That range has now been increased to 100m (328 ft.), while up to eight devices can now receive load data from a single load cell. As before, collected data can be sent onto other recipients in the form of an Excel spreadsheet or .pdf report. David Ayling, director at SP, said: “We were


confident that the Bluetooth option would be popular, with distributors and partners immediately noting the capability to send reports from the same device that captures data and is already on their person, like a mobile or cell phone. However, the extent to which the technology was embraced was overwhelming, as was the positive feedback we received and requests for enhancements.” Ayling reiterated that Bluetooth is


designed for use over relatively short distances. The app takes its name from SP’s Handheld plus display unit, which has a range of up to


700m (2,300ft.), while the Multiple Wireless Load Cell Controller (SW-MWLC) software package displays and logs data from up to 100 SP wireless load cells simultaneously. However, this technology is better suited to more demanding, specialist applications—not the focal point of the Bluetooth concept. The app itself was released earlier this year,


available for download and easy connection to any SP load cells that possess the same technology. The updated version features a number of major enhancements including the addition of an analogue load indicator to the main screen; and new languages in Dutch, Spanish, Norwegian, Japanese, and Chinese. Further, the app now automatically adds GPS coordinates into data logging reports, and features updated overload and warning alarms to accommodate manual value entries. Ayling concluded: “I spoke upon launch


of the first versions of these game-changing technologies about the increasing importance of the Internet of Things and, fittingly, Bluetooth 4.2 specifically incorporates extra IoT features. Once again, credit is owed to our network of partners in industry who have taken an SP innovation, which was already cutting-edge, and challenged us to improve it even further to make their use of it even more constructive at the coalface.” Separately, SP relaunched the Clamp On


Line Tensionmeter (or COLT) with a host of new features. The COLT measures tension on wire


rope up to 11,000 lbf (lb. force) / 5,000 kgf (kg force) and up to 1 in. / 25mm diameter. It clamps onto pre-tensioned wire ropes, eliminating the need for additional sheaves or tooling, as is the case with alternative solutions. An integral Bluetooth module, meanwhile, transmits tension data wirelessly to any smart device running the Android or iOS app that also contains an infinite wire rope library. Tension in wire ropes can be measured and logged within a few seconds. Given the nature of work in this sector,


where wind and other elements are of critical concern, a notable feature of the updated COLT is its ability to automatically fetch local weather conditions (temperature, wind speed, and wind direction), which is added to the data in the logging report, available on a cell phone or smart device. This is in addition to the app already grabbing GPS coordinates. The COLT has already excelled in the


field including applications involving tower and stack guy wires; pretensioned cable barriers; zip lines, bridges; elevators; winch
