[EDITOR’S NOTE]

If your work requires travel – and we know that many of yours does – you’ve probably flown to a distant city and rented a car. Even a relatively high mileage rental car is likely to be quite new, and it may well be a make and model you don’t own and may never have driven. Apart from starting your rental car, you probably need to adjust the seat position and mirrors, set the climate control, and perhaps tune the radio. Tose are all simple tasks – in theory. But in an unfamiliar new car, the technology that various automakers are

applying to dashboard and control interfaces can pose some real challenges to your intuition. Properly applied, technology should simplify complex tasks, not make simple tasks harder. While every first encounter we have with new technology isn’t always ideal, we’ve been seeking out businesses that are developing and applying new technology in the lifting and rigging sector, and in construction and material handling more generally. If you’re not at least thinking about how to better leverage technology in your business, there’s a good chance technology will happen to you in the form of a competitive development, and you’ll be forced to respond. With that in mind, we meet Gorbel and their CraneBrian3D system in this issue.

While Gorbel operates in the material handling sector, which is largely distinct from the crane and rigging audience we serve with Wire Rope Exchange, we think there is a lot to learn from the way they think about and operate their business. Also in this issue, our Cover Feature checks in on the explosion of wind energy projects

currently underway. Significant private sector demand and the phaseout of the Production Tax Credit have made 2018 extremely busy – and will likely make 2019 even busier – for many firms serving this sector. And be sure to check out our WRE Advisor. Exhibiting at a major trade show is a big commitment, and we have insight from show-floor veterans. You’ve got to invest quite a bit of time to not only have the right people in place to engage show visitors at your booth, you’ve got to plan the booth to be engaging and communicate with prospects before and after the show. You’ve also got to select the right events to find your customers and your best prospects.

In an upcoming issue, we’ll follow up with a preview 2019 industry events to help you do just that. If you have comments about anything in our pages, or a subject you’d like us to write about in a future issue, please let us know! y

Best Regards,
