Flower display boosts appeal for church roof


THE Holy Cross Church in Bearstedraisedmore than£1,700 in its most recent fundraising event towards the Raise the Roof cam- paign,writes Jade Schopman. Thedrive for contributions started


after architects informed Rev John Corbyn a roof renovation costingup to £400,000 cannot be put off for much longer. The event, a floral display in and


around the church, aswell as a con- cert onSeptember 14-16washaileda huge success thanks to locals and event organisers. The fundraising startedwith aChristmas bazaar last year. The presentation featured 16 ex-


hibits of knittedandcrochetedflow- ers, along with huge floral arrangements to complement the church’s tallwindows. Curate Melissa Carter said: “The


flower exhibit and concert was our first ever event like it, so we really did not knowwhat to expect. “We are so pleased with the out-


come, the church was never empty the entire weekend. People really


enjoyed it and we are thrilled on howit all turned out. “We had no specific target or ex-


pectations for the festival given the huge cash sumrequired, but £1,700 exceeded all of our hopes, we will definitely put onmore events like it in the future. “Our next event towards theRaise
