Hospitals ‘failing’ to meet vital care targets

PRESSURES on local hospitals are growing, with key national targets missed. The latest reports byGP-ledNHS

West Kent Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) showMaidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospital Trust is seriously missing more than one important cancer target, plus both A&E and referral to treatment tar- gets. The greatest concern is about de-

lays in 62-day cancer treatment im- pacting patients, with urgent GP referrals having their first definitive treatment. The national target is 85%, but in the last fourmonths the trust has achieved only 64.93%. The CCG and the trust are now

working closely with NHS regula- tors on recovery plans and weekly meetings are being held. An im- provement to 65.55% was achieved in the latest recordedmonth. The trust is increasing clinic and

diagnostics capacity, and clinicians are developing an evidence-based tool for patient harmreviews.

The percentage of patients with

suspected cancer referred urgently byGPs to be seenwithin twoweeks has fallen to 85.54% against the na- tional target of 93%. The national target for A&E for

admitting, transferring or discharg- ing patientss within four hours of

arrival is 95% and the trust’s per- formance for the first four months of the yearwas 92.76%, 92%, 93.81% and 92.73%. The broader referral to treatment

target (within 18weeks) is 92%and the trust has achieved 82.99%across the first fourmonths of its year.
