News New delays to

A26 re-opening THE re-opening of theA26 through Maidstone has suffered yet another delay, as utility companies continue to carry outworks fivemonths after a sinkhole appeared. The void opened up on May 28

and took an enormous piece of the Tonbridge Road with it, causing major inconvenience for motorists and nearby businesses. Kent County Council had hoped

to have the road re-opened in time for the start of the school year, but a number of issues meant the date was revised to October 15. Thiswill no longer be the case as

the final pavement layer is put down and the site is cleared. A KCC statement said: "UK

Power Networks’ jointing works are complete and this nowfrees up the site for the final reinstatement and surfacing of both footways, due thisweek between KCC’s rein- statement of the asphalt carriage- way layers. “BT Openreach remains on site,

however this has not delayed the carriageway resurfacing.” KCC says the final activities are

more vulnerable toweather. TheA26 remained shut asDowns Mailwent to press.

Water leaks close vital road through village

TWO water pipe leaks closed Leeds, causing chaos on the roads. The village was shut on October

15 and remained blocked to traffic as DownsMailwent to press. Thousands of carswhich use the

village to get to theA20 or theA274 had to find alternative routes along back roads and country lanes. Caring Lane and OldMill Road,

Burberry Lane, Park Barn Road, Broomfield Road and Back Street were among those affected. South East Water was forced to

shut the B2163 to repair a leak on PenfoldHill. An earlier leakwas re- paired opposite Leeds & Broom- field Primary School. But the school was closed while

thewater supplywas interrupted. Around 30 houses in Lower

Street were also without water as the utility company tried to find the source of the leak.Alarge stack of bottled water was left outside the church for locals to use. County councillorGaryCooke, a supporter of a Leeds-Langley relief

road, said: “As usual, the smaller roads end up bearing the brunt of the volumes of traffic which use the road each day. The B2163 can’t cope, so howcan the little roads?" Charles Healey, Regional Net-

work Manager for South East Water, said: “We are sorry to those customers who have been affected by the water supply issues in Leeds, nearMaidstone. “Wewere alerted to a problemin

the area just before 11am on Octo- ber 14 and our teams re-directed water around our network to re-

store supplies to as many cus- tomers as possible.” One Leeds resident, who was

caught up in the chaos on her way home fromwork, said: “I thought I would be okay using Old Mill Road but it was chocca and took me ages to get home. The back roads cannot cope. “Friends told me that Caring

Lane was a nightmare. It just goes to showthat the B2163 is themajor road through that part of Maid- stone and once it’s out, there’s nothing else.”
