One of themost frequent questions I get asked iswhether people need protein powders to loseweight, gain muscle or simply tone up – and it can be confusing! There’s no doubt about it, having protein in our diets is ESSENTIAL. Protein ismade up from amino acids,which are also known as “the building blocks of life” – these little pieces string together in different chains tomake different proteins. The amino acids in protein are referred to as ‘BCAAs’ – branched chain amino acids.Our bodies produce some of the amino
acids naturally, but somemust come fromdietary sources aswe can’t actually produce themourselves. It’s therefore important to have awide range of protein sources in your diet; our bodies need a good dose of the varying amino acids to function at its best. Wheyprotein is themost
common and generally the cheapest option out there.Whey is a by- product of cheese production and so comes frommilk.Whey protein is quickly absorbed by the body, so is the powder of choice formany
exercisers as a fastway of fuelling theirmuscles immediately after a
workout.Caseinprotein is another popular powderwhich also comes frommilk, but casein is slower- digesting thanwhey and so can help fuel your body for a little longer. These two protein powders are
great formost of us – and they’re reasonably cheap too – but obviously aren’t suitable for vegans or dairy-free
people.All is not lost, however. There are plenty of plant- based protein supplements available – take soyprotein, for example.
