JULY 2018 • COUNTRY LIFE IN BC Island welcomes
Angus breeders BC members honoured
by CARLEY HENNIGER COURTENAY – Typical ‘Wet’
Coast rain failed to put a damper on the 2018 Canadian Angus National Convention in Courtenay in early June. Hosted by the BC Angus Association, the four-day event comes to be BC once every eight years.
While not open to the
public, Thursday is one of the most productive and intensive days of the convention. “CanProv” allows provincial Angus association representatives to meet with Canadian Angus staff to address common concerns and topics of interest. After a tour of a local salmon farm, the day wrapped up with a visit to Shelter Point Distillery for the President’s Reception. This year convention
theme focussed on sustainable and environmentally-conscious cattle ranching. Friday’s morning and afternoon sessions alternated in order for delegates to attend both during the day.
One session was lead by BC
Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+) program co-ordinator Annette Moore and focused on the program outline and the benefits of the VBP+ program. This session provided an excellent overview of the program and resulted in a number of new registrants.
A sustainable agriculture
panel ran concurrently with the VBP program, and was chaired by Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef community engagement manager Andrea White. The CRSB’s objective is to promote sustainability across the Canadian beef industry through three pillars of focus (environmental, social and economic performance) and the goal of Canadian Beef Sustainability Acceleration (CBSA) Pilot is to help make Canada the first country to deliver beef from certified sustainable sources, establishing Canadian beef as synonymous with sustainability in the global market.
While it was incredibly
interesting to hear from corporate partners why sustainable beef production is so important, it was all tied together by a Canadian Angus producer who also sat on the panel to talk about the benefits from a grassroots level.
Keynote speaker Bruce
Vincent is from the logging industry out of Libby, Montana and he spoke to Angus producers Friday afternoon about the importance of social licence. His motivational speech
focussed on the importance of advocating for ourselves as stewards of the land and activists for the environment and animal welfare. His presentation garnered a standing ovation.

The day ended with a
“Hoedown on the Pacific,” a surf-and-turf BBQ and dance hosted by Brad and Aleta Chappell’s Heart of the Valley Farms.
The Canadian Angus
Association’s annual meeting on Saturday morning included a question-and- answer forum with the president and CEO; a presentation about the CAA’s newly launched strategic plan, and a commemorative presentation celebrating 50 years of Red Angus registrations in the Canadian Angus herdbook. The day ended with a banquet and a number of awards presentations. The BC Angus Association began the awards ceremony with a presentation to retired BCAA secretary/treasurer Jill Savage. She was presented with a service award for over a
decade of commitment to Angus in BC, as well as the honourary president award alongside her husband, Lance. Canadian Junior Angus
presented their junior ambassador award to Matthew McGillivray of Kamloops. Karl and Kristine
Sauter from Wawota, SK were presented the Outstanding Young Angus Breeder of the Year award. The Canadian Angus
Association also presented Doug Haughton with a 50- year long-term recognition award.
