Farm smarter. The best plow in the world.

COUNTRY LIFE IN BC • JULY 2018

Great spring for nurseries Challenge is to keep ahead of trends in gardening

by DAVID SCHMIDT LANGLEY – Good spring weather leads to

good years for nursery growers and retailers. And because this was a good spring, “it’s been a great year for retailers,” Mike Mills of Sunshine Coast Nursery said at the BC Landscape and Nursery Association end-of- season

Designed for In Furrow and On Land operations, the EO/LO are robust ploughs requiring lower lift requirements than other brands. The 300 heavy duty head stock provides the necessary strength for smooth reversing. The Kverneland unique steels and the heat treatment of the complete plough guarantee the longevity.

spring followed several heavy winter snowfalls and a late ice storm. However, neither caused much

damage to growers. Simon Bos of Qualitree Propagators noted they

The Kverneland NG-S 101 is a heavy duty power harrow for all kinds of operations in all types of soil conditions. Robustly designed with the Kverneland heavy-duty trough design and Quick-Fit tines this power harrow is the right alternative for large farms and farm contractors.

THE PROFESSIONAL SOLUTION.

“Asian-style easy-care landscapes are in and English country gardens are out,” he added. Mills said retailers are constantly looking for new plants but Mosterman responded that growers “can meet trends but not fads,” pointing out propagators “need two years to grow a tree.”

lost a couple of cold frames but no plants. Sylvia Mosterman of Mosterman Plants did lose a few plants to snow damage but none to the ice storm. Consumer preferences have changed considerably in the 16 years Mills has owned his garden centre. “When I started, annuals were number one;

now they are number four or five,” he said. Sales of fruit trees are also down, says

Leanne Johnson of GardenWorks, one of BC’s largest independent retailers. Instead, tropical plants are becoming more popular as are any plants in “funky” indoor pots. A lot of people are also moving away from decorative plants and moving toward food plants, “but no one knows how to do it,” says Mike Evison of Calibre Landscaping. “If you can educate them how to grow

vegetables, it would help,” he told BCLNA staff. Evison also told growers to focus on smaller

plants saying consumers “want plants that grow three-feet tall, not 10-feet tall.”

The Kverneland Taarup 9578 C and 9584 C ProLine are designed for the toughest conditions and feature a high performance oil-bath gearbox and a strong carrier frame. The ability to make sharp turns up to 80° and the cross stabilizer in the headstock are unique Kverneland features.

also increasing, even though GardenWorks has not yet participated in the BCLNA’s “Plant Something Bee Friendly” promotional program. Mills, on the other hand, gave the program the thumbs up. “It’s a complementary program to what

we’re already doing.” BC Ministry of Agriculture nursery specialist

Dave Woodske also updated BCLNA members on efforts to halt the spread of the Japanese beetle. After the invasive pest was found in a small area of Vancouver last year, the area was quarantined by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, meaning no soil-bearing plants are allowed out of it. The City of Vancouver has set up a special green waste disposal site within the quarantine area. Woodske says there will be extensive monitoring for the pest this year, noting the beetle has the potential to devastate the local industry if it spreads.
