Chicken pricing formula isn’t right
Processors maintain they’ve been overpaying for poultry
by DAVID SCHMIDT ABBOTSFORD – The ink is
barely dry on the existing pricing agreement but the BC Chicken Marketing Board is already looking at a revision. The BCCMB expects to
have a new pricing formula in place by period A-151, beginning July 9, growers were told at their regular meeting in Abbotsford, June 6. Meanwhile, the Primary
Poultry Processors Association of BC has appealed the BCCMB’s method of calculating the price based on the agreement reached September 8, 2017. They claim the board’s calculations resulted in a price that has been 1.2 cents/kg too high for the past five periods.
Although that was not cited as the cause, growers were told chicken is becoming less competitive to beef. Despite that, chicken demand continues to increase and Chicken Farmers of Canada expects to set its next allocations at 5% over base. BC growers may already
have exceeded that, with BC Chicken Growers Association president Dale Krahn noting BC production is already “slightly over” its allocation and could result in a small penalty to the province. He told growers that the association and the board recently met with an independent consultant to develop a memorandum of understanding on their respective roles and responsibilities. “Our association/marketing
board relationship is different than in all other provinces,” he noted, saying “we want to fill gaps, remove overlaps and make sure we’re not on different pages when we talk to government.” The end result of the discussions could be that the BCCGA hires its own general manager. ”A GM would lighten the
workload of the BCCGA executive and directors who all have their own farms and jobs,” Krahn said.
One issue the association
has taken to government is the negative impact the carbon tax is having on growers. It has also asked government to allow more growers to be elected to the BCCMB, saying it is unfair to single out the chicken sector from other supply-managed boards and commissions.
Growers were also told the
BCCMB is finalizing details on a new quota issuance, now that the BC Farm Industry Review Board has issued its Quota Assessment Tools Review decision. That decision means that any growers who sold part of their quota within the past 12 months will be ineligible to receive new quota. “It’s retroactive,” Krahn
stressed.
He also announced the association is planning to expand its Poultry In Motion program. The BCCGA is now obtaining quotes for a third custom-built Mini-Barn trailer which would be placed on Vancouver Island.

Pitt Crew
On June 2, the Pitt River 4-H Swine Club was in the Pitt Meadows Day parade. We had two sheep on our float and no pigs because they get too stressed when they have to move to different places. We all wore 4-H club shirts that said Pitt Crew on the back. We also sold hot dogs right beside the co-op at a tent to fundraise money. This year the Pitt River Swine Club got first place in the parade! We were all so excited that we got first. One last thing: Avenue Farm Machinery gave us a tractor for the day! So, thank you to them. Hopefully, you will see us next year in the parade.
