FANCY some retro 60’s rock n roll, pop and country music? Like to get up and dance? Then put this date in your diary – 7.30pm on Saturday night 13th October, in the Saxmundham Market Hall. How about making up a party? This is a charity fund-raiser night - with live music from the Dave Drain Band, a licensed bar for refresh- ments and a raffle with great prizes. This fun live music event is

being put on to raise funds for the Saxmundham-based social enterprise PASTEL, which pro- vides social activities, and life skills training, to support young adults with learning disabilities.

This provides respite for both them, their parent carers and sib- lings, all day on Saturdays twice a month. Fellow local social enterprise

SMART (Saxmundham Music & Art CIC) will be supporting this event by providing a licensed bar and helping to pro- mote the event. Tickets are £4 each (£5 on the

door) and will be available from Crisps in Saxmundham High Street or by calling 07873 790366. You can find more details on

the Sax Music Fest website www.saxmusicfest.co.uk and please visit www.pastel.org.uk to find out more about PASTEL.

ALDEBURGH Music Club Choir performs ‘The Armed Man’ by Karl Jenkins at Snape Maltings on Saturday 24th No- vember to commemorate the armistice centenary. The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’ was commissioned by the Royal Armouries for its millennium celebrations and dedicated to victims of the Kosovo crisis. An emotive and essentially anti-war work scored for choir, soloists - in- cluding muezzin and boy tre- ble - and large orchestra, the Mass has added relevance and poignancy in 2018 – evidenced by the number of scheduled performances worldwide. An- other dimension will be added by the inclusion of The Armed Man film as part of the per- formance. The programme includes: ‘The Banks of Green Willow’, by George Butterworth and ‘Lord, Thou Hast Been Our Refuge’, by Ralph Vaughan Williams; both men served on the West- ern Front where a sniper’s round killed George Butter- worth at the Battle of the Som-

me in 1916; ‘Pie Jesu’ and ‘In Paradisum’ from Gabriel Fau- ré’s Requiem; and ‘Nimrod’ from Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Aldeburgh Music Club Choir performs with the Prometh- eus Orchestra under the baton of Edmond Fivet, the Club’s Music Director. They are joined by soloists Elinor Rolfe Johnson (soprano), Marie El- liott (mezzo-soprano), Richard Pinkstone (tenor) and Christo- pher Cull (baritone). Aldeburgh Music Club are delighted to be arranging the concert in association with the Suffolk Branch of SSAFA (The Armed Forces Charity) for whom there will be a retir- ing collection at the end of the concert. Tickets priced £18, £22 and £25 (students half price) are available now from Snape Maltings Box Office on 01728 687110 or via the club’s web- site www.aldeburghmusic.club Performance details: Saturday 24th November commencing at 7.30 pm at Snape Maltings Concert Hall.

SAD to say that despite sending out 45 invitations to known supporters of the Suffolk Regiment, only 15 people were able to join us for the inaugural meeting of the Friends of the Suffolk Regiment at the Leiston Community Centre on the Thursday afternoon of September 6th, for tea, scones and chat. Taff Gillingham and Mark Forsdike had kindly given up their time to come and speak to us. Each gave an encouraging and informative talk, both about the Friends of the Suffolk Regiment, and of the possible fate of the Memorial Flag in

Friends of the Suffolk Regiment Leiston Branch

the Long Shop Museum if not properly identified as a Memorial to those men from Leiston who fought and gave their lives in WW2 in the Far East. It is vitally important that this Memorial Flag should be identified as belonging to the people of Leiston, and ownership of it to the Leiston Branch of the Friends of the Suffolk Regiment, who have reserved funds for its preservation. Many old magazines, booklets and photographs of present and departed comrades were there to view, and tea and scones and chat were greatly enjoyed. Anyone who was unable to

join us on the 6th, and wishing to keep in touch, our friend Mark Forsdike has set up a separate section of the Friends' website for the Leiston Branch. It contains a 'potted' history of the town's military past, along with a branch history and contact page. Also look out for info on Facebook, via John Murphy. And now it is time to bid

a fond farewell and grateful thanks for many years of loyal and devoted service to the committee members of the old OCA – namely David Bailey, Teddy Bailey, Trevor Peskett, John Richardson, Jim Taylor and Jim Taylor. Keep calm, and don’t fall
