Ridgeway riders excel at Burghley W
By Catherine O’Kelly
iltshire’s Tim Price and Ringwood Sky Boy presented an
elegant dressage test at Burghley Horse Trials, scoring 26.9 - just half a penalty behind Mark Todd and Kiltubrid Rhapsody who lay first overnight. With just four combinations going clear within the time, Tim and Sky Boy managed to take the lead despite 0.4 time penalties on the cross country course which riders were heard repeatedly describing as “big to walk, and even bigger to ride.”
This pair were fifth at Burghley last year and produced one of only eight clear show jumping rounds to stay on their cross country score, ahead of last year’s winner Oliver Townend and Ballaghmor Class on 31.9 and Andrew Nicholson and Swallow Springs on 32.1.
“What a super year,” said Tim, who had another top 10 placing with other ride, Bango. “Sky Boy deserves a good day – so often

we nail two out of the three phases, so to finally pull them all together in a major competition is fantastic. This win means everything and I’m super proud of my horse.”
World number one and last year’s winner, Oliver Townend was still proud of Ballaghmor Class’ second place finish this year, after a clear cross country
within the time: “It’s all about consistency,” he said. “He’s still only 11 and I’ve been telling people for years how good he is. He’s proved that again today. For me, he turned into a professional this week and dug deep whereas last year he won out of naivety.”
Oliver had three rides at the event and finished 12th with Cooley SRS but withdrew MHS

Third was five-time Burghley winner Andrew Nicholson on the relatively young, at 10 years old, Swallow Springs, who also had a clear cross country which brought them up to fifth place for the show jumping where they were also clear, making them the only combination to stay on their dressage score. This was the horse’s first four star and this season has really developed.
“I’m very, very pleased with him,” said Andrew, who is also Wiltshire based. “He got distracted by the crowds in the show jumping at Blenheim last year where he had three down, and felt a bit babyish at Bramham in the summer, but he was pure class here. He had a look at the TV camera as we came down to the treble but came back to me when I asked him to focus.”
