Horses have evolved to hide pain and as a consequence often show little or no symptoms of even quite severe dental problems. Many horses have undiagnosed dental pathology which can develop into painful conditions if left. It is advisable to have an annual oral examination and preparing for winter is the perfect time to ensure all well in your horse’s mouth. The whole team carries the equipment needed to carry out a detailed inspection of your horse’smouth. Stuart Altoft specialises in Equine dentistry and accepts referral work as well as seeing our own clients.

smelling hay but this must be fed with caution. In prolonged periods of hot, dry weather, sugar accumulates in the grass due to lack of water and extreme temperatures inhibite grass growth. When grass can’t grow, the sugars it produces are not utilised so are instead stored for when conditions allow rapid growth, after rain. When this grass is cut, the hot sun dries the grass quickly, so very little stored sugar is broken down as the grass respires. The resulting hay therefore smells divine but could have dangerous levels of sugar.

Because forage is such an important part of your horse’s diet, make sure you feed them something you can trust. Unlike hay, which can vary in quality, Devon Haylage is consistent all year round providing a healthier alternative.

It is important to know what species of grass your hay contains as ryegrass, for example, will naturally contain higher levels of sugar compared to meadow grass, fescues or Timothy. The only way to know for sure whether your hay is safe to feed is to

have it nutritionally tested. This will tell you if soaking is required. At Devon Haylage, we have already had people telling us that even after many hours of soaking, their hay still contains too much sugar therefore they have moved onto our Timothy haylage very low levels of sugar.

Some have also been forced to start feeding this year’s hay earlier due to the current forage shortage from winter stocks being fed more heavily due to the harsh winter and lack of grass growth in the summer. To be on the safe side, consider nutritionally testing any of this year’s hay and monitor sugar sensitive horses by regularly checking for pulses in the lower forelimb, abnormal heat in the hooves and cresty necks.
