Back in our summer issues, we met a few intrepid driving enthusiasts who were keen to undertake InHarness Magazine’s Drive 500 miles challenge. We caught up with a few of them to find out how they’ve been getting on.

Nichola Waddicor’s Cosmo on the scarecrow trail Nichola and Cosmo

Nichola Waddicor and her 12hh, 13 year old Dartmoor Hill pony, Cosmo have been together for ten years. Formerly her daughter’s ride and drive pony, Cosmo and Nichola had been having a somewhat laid back existence and were on a mission to get fit again.

“Whoever came up with the idea of this challenge deserves a medal; we are loving it! Ten weeks in, we are lurking around the 200 miles mark, managing to stick to our target of 20 miles per week.

“For someone who is non- competitive, this challenge is perfect. It has given us purpose and resolve to our drives out with the added bonus that Cosmo has actually lost weight and is a lot fitter – so much so that my daughter has now started to ‘steal’ him to use a part of her pair in the world of driving trials!

“We have tackled everything from the air tattoo, a triathlon, a steam rally and a scarecrow trail. We have completed two charity drives and discovered lots of new routes around the Cotswolds, meeting some really lovely people on our travels.

“We have been busy too, taking photos of our adventures, collecting them all in a folder. It adds another dimension to our drives as we decide where to get a good picture on the way round – backstepper Morgan is also official photographer.

“Our aim is to achieve 300 miles by the time the clocks change- bring it on!”

Rachel and Doris

Rachel’s 11 year old mare, Doris is the result of a long ambition held by Rachel to breed her own horse. Signing up to Drive 500 for the personal challenge without the pressure of competitions, the

pair had already completed 130 miles when we last spoke with them.

“We are enjoying the driving challenge and have now completed 285 miles.

“We mostly drive on our own at home but we have completed a few BDS Norfolk drives. It was great fun to travel somewhere different for a change, and meet up with fellow drivers. We also have some good friends who visit from Leicestershire and join us for longer drives at home.

“Doris is fitter than she was before, having been driven more over the summer. Now her winter coat is beginning to appear though so the next job will be clipping, rugging and stabling at night, and squeezing drives into the shorter days on their way!”

The Drive 500 challenge costs just £10 to join. There is no time limit to complete the challenge and you will be supported from the start with a record card, top tips for getting out there, two branded hi-viz waistcoats to keep your safe and the exclusive e-newsletter for Drive 500 members.
