Mary Ward Centre


Founded by the Victorian novelist Mrs Humphry Ward through a settlement in the 1880s, it has evolved into one of the friendliest places in London to study. Tere are classes and qualification courses in a variety of subjects, from counselling to business, languages to fitness.


Niche Classes L’Atelier des Chef London


With hundreds of tours of London run- ning around the city every day, one might wonder what it takes to be a tour guide. Well, there are lots of answers to this ques- tion. First, there are out of work actors or students who memorise a script and work for various guiding companies or the free/tip companies that operate in Trafalgar Square. Ten, there are badge guides who earn a qualification. Te City of London course is one year and covers the Square Mile, it is run by the City of London Corporation and members are given their badge by the City of London Guide & Lecturers Association. Te course is also recognised by the Institute of Tourist Guides (ITG) as a green badge qualifica- tion. Te City of Westminster course and the Clerkenwell & Islington course are run through the University of Westminster. Graduates will receive a badge from the City of Westminster Guide & Lecturers Association or Clerkenwell Guides Association. Camden Tour Guides Association runs a one year course on the borough of Camden, culminating in a badge. Westminster, Clerkenwell and Camden are not recognised by the ITG. Each of these courses are one year, run one night a week with a Saturday morning walk, cost less than £1,000, require an in- terview process to be accepted to the course, and have both internal and external examinations. Te ITG run the Blue Badge Course, a two-year qualification that costs closer to £8,000 with rigorous testing, potential qualifications of a second language, and classes that run three times a week. Te Blue Badge also has a unionised guiding rate and members are allowed to guide inside prestigious areas such as Westminster Abbey and Tower of London.

Established in 1889, Morley College is one of the country’s largest and oldest providers of adult education. Every subject is covered here, be it short courses or long qualifica- tions. Te unique offering of classes will pique your interest with titles such as: Forensic Psychology, Memoir Writing, Design and print your own flip-flops and Oranges are not the only fruit.


Obby


New on the scene is an aggregate website called Obby. (www.obby.co.uk) where class and course providers can list their services on one website. Launched in August 2016, it is an online portal for creative instructors to market their wares. Tink Eventbrite for classes. Te variety is there, along with an array of price points, but classes tend to be small and well reviewed.


Pub Life


Brewing classes may sound like the next step from a hobby that has gone beyond a fun kitchen experiment, but with beer being such a serious drink, you can get the education to match. Passion for this bever- age has encouraged many to offer courses and classes which can be found all over London. Founded in 2003, the Beer and Cider Academy (www.ibd.org.uk) offer a professional qualification covering all levels of commercial brewing, distilling, malting and packaging. It’s perfect for the beer lover who has taken home brewing to the next level and is contemplating a career change. Looking for something a little less intense, Greenwich Meantime Brewery (www.meantimebrewing.com) have a mas- terclass and a barrel ageing class.


Queens and Kings


Oxford University (www.conted.ox.ac.uk) offers courses through their Department of Continuing Education including: Foundation Certificate in History where you can learn everything about Queens

Religion


Religion can be studied at many of the lo- cations already listed (CityLit, WMC, Mary Ward, Morley College). Online you can check out Open University (www.open.edu) for religion courses. London Central Mosque offers an Introduction to Islam (www.iccuk.org) and other courses. London Buddhist Centre (www.lbc.org.uk) gives classes and courses on the different aspects of Buddhism. Quakers (www.londonquakers.org.uk) also provide events and classes to introduce you to their religion.
