I arived in th UK fom Nigria on the 6th of January 2018 right in the middle of winter. I was very hopeful and excited about the new opportunities and
experiences this international assignment would give my family, especially the opportunity to work in a different country’s environment, the chance to travel and explore Europe as well as the possibility to make new friends.
Our children were due to resume school so my focus was on getting them packed up and ready for the new term. With the children settled in school and my husband back at work I felt it was time to actively start looking for a job for myself. Having worked with a globally recognized brand for more than 15 years, I hadn’t really thought it would be a challenge getting a job in London.
I registered on all the recommended job sites and applied for jobs that I believed my experience was well-suited for but without any success. Tis went on until I got a FOCUS invitation for its Career Development Program – Fast Trackers (CDP). My initial intention was really just to attend the program to keep myself busy as well as to use the program as a networking opportunity.

Te Career Development Program however turned out to be very helpful on two levels: one, it provided me an opportunity to have my CV reviewed by a professional recruiter, and two, it provided me with deep insight into the UK job market and how to effectively navigate it with success. Based on the pointers and feedback from the program, I updated my CV and cover letter templates. As a follow-up to the CDP, FOCUS also connected me with an independent recruiter who reviewed my updated CV. Te feedback from the recruiter was uplifting.
I am pleased to say that following the CDP, my job search has been very encouraging and I am currently volunteering as the Membership Lead for a career network which has provided me with opportunities to engage recruiters and HR professionals. I have since attended many other events at FOCUS and the team have been friendly and professional. FOCUS has been a great resource and I just want to say ‘Tank You!’ to every member of the team.
