LIVING AND WORKING WITH THE HORSE OF SPAIN
his hind legs, his front legs tucked in tight, and springing straight into the air as if to smell the sky. As the music picked up tempo, the pair leapt into a gallop. The performance was astounding and all the more so because the rider had no hands on the reins: they were tied to his belt in the same way that a rejoneodor’s reins would be when he requires two hands for the banderillas. These performances inspired
me to acquire the Garrochista’s skills, including working with no hands on the reins. In time, with our first horse Chico’s invaluable help and a few directional mishaps I had the confidence to put this in the show. I have used my Fantasia a la Garrocha to show this extraordinary equestrian art to a wider audience for nearly thirty years. I have trained seven of our own
stallions to perform Garrocha and many others for clients Here are just a few photos of them over the years.
turns, changes of leg and pirouettes seen in a Doma Vaquera competition, and often at speed that defies belief. Some years ago Isaw a display by
Sebastian Fernandes. It started at a slow rhythmical walk, with just a few simple and artistic turns around, then under, the Garrocha, and then progressed to a series of breathtaking spins under the pole. The movements and shapes created were artistic, almost balletic, and, as with ballet, the beauty of a performance hides the amount of agility, strength and stamina required by the performers. I have also witnessed another
outstanding display by Jesus Morales. The rider entered the arena with the Garrocha carried on his right shoulder, took off his hat with his left hand and began a remarkable performance. His horse moved forward in a piaffe- like way, making several turns on the haunches both under and away from the Garrocha. Each turn was a single movement, a graceful lift of the forehand, a 180 degree turn and a soft return to the ground: a media vuelta. Each turn coiled the horse like a spring until he could contain his energy no longer and he burst into a Courbette, rising onto
