OXFORDSHIRE GIRL OUT & ABOUT
LUSITANO BREED SHOW MORTON MORRELL
T
his years Lusitano Breed Show was held for the second year at Morton Morrell in the last weekend of June. The weather was at its hottest and the heatwave certainly
made it seem more like Portugal than England which somehow felt appropriate, our cold rainy days make astrange contrast to this beautiful breed of horse that is much more suited to sunnier climes. This show is one of the most friendly shows that you
can attend, the Lusitano horse seems to attract a certain kind of owner and there is great camaraderie amongst everyone there, Ihave also noticed this a great deal in my trips out to Portugal, the genuine heartfelt congratulations that are given to whoever wins is truly heartening. The nature of the Lusitano is friendly, giving and intelligent
which is what makes this breed so sought after across the globe, its versatility is incredible and to watch all these horses taking everything in their stride in Warwickshire was great. The Luso just seems to join in with whatever their owners are doing and blends into the scenery until they are required not to. The weekend was packed full of classes, both ridden and in
hand with good entries for all, Portuguese costume is worn by many and this year we were lucky enough to have with us Silvia Teixeira who is a Portuguese costume designer from Portugal, she makes the most amazing costumes which have a vintage twist to them, taking you back in time to a more feminine era of horse riding, her clothing is full of little details and the riding corsets give the outfits a fantastic shape It was absolutely fascinating to see all the variations of jackets that can be worn and no. Icouldn’t resist buying one! The Gala evening is always a treat to watch, this year there
was a ridden pairs display by Justine Armitage and Janine Pendlebury Lee giving a beautifully fluid performance to music, the two sisters make a fantastic team which certainly shows in their riding, There is something quite magical about riding to music especially when it is done as well as this. This was followed by the Parade class which brought a little
taste of Golega to the Warwickshire countryside, Golega is a horse festival like no other where the streets are packed with horses and riders, people sit on their horses at bars and ride

in the Manga, which is like an arena just full of horses being shown at their best. The Parade class captures a little bit of this atmosphere for an evening, Portuguese wine and food were served which the riders were offered whilst still mounted as is traditional, the arena was filled with dancing horses and Portuguese music, the whole atmosphere is like that of a festival in Portugal, totally relaxed with the horses giving an air of flamboyant theatricality that this breed is so good at. Of all the winners this year most notable was Champion
of Champions, Espartaco ridden by Paulo Santos owned by Tracey Simon, his presence in the ring left a lasting impression on everyone, beautiful, extravagant paces. As always a wonderful weekend filled with
dancing horses and great people.
