Truck driver drives at Speedwatchvolunteers

A SPEEDWATCH team have de- scribed how they were forced to jump to safety after a motorist mounted the pavement in a bid to crush their camera. Like dozens of communities,

Headcorn has responded to grow- ing concern about speeding traffic in the village by launching its own Speedwatch project. The scheme – a parish council initiative – went live in June. Trained volunteers list vehicles

exceeding the 30mph speed limit, which are passed to Kent Police. On this occasion, three volunteers, in hi-vis jackets, were standing on the grass, behind the pavement and raised kerb near the village fire station. It is alleged that a truck, with

several passengers, passed the Speedwatch volunteers and turned around at the nearby railway sta- tion entrance and drove back at the group, forcing them to flee. The matter is now the subject of a po- lice investigation.

Aspokesman for the group,who

asked not to be named, said: “It was terrifying that someonewould do this, even if only to shock us. It could so easily have ended with someone being hurt.” In spite of the incident, Head-

corn’s Speedwatch volunteers say they are more determined than ever to continue with the scheme, which they say does slow drivers. The spokesman added: “We are

here to let drivers know the speed they should be doing. It is not

about getting people prosecuted. We run the scheme as often as we can, because in that way drivers slowdown automatically, which is what we all want.” The scheme is co-ordinated by

Kent Police, with volunteers re- quired tomeet training standards. Sites used by Speedwatch volun- teers are also surveyed for their suitability by officers and the pa- perwork monitored and followed up by Kent Police. In the last 12 months, Speedwatch groups across the county have recorded 65,000 speeding drivers. Parish council vice chairman

BridgetDungey said: “Speedwatch is there to remind people to slow down. It is a community response, manned by volunteers concerned about the safety of their fellowvil- lagers. We do not expect this kind of behaviour from motorists to- wards people simply trying to slow traffic down.” Join the Speedwatch scheme by calling 01622 892496.
