SO, WHAT IS ACNE?
Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that causes whiteheads, blackheads and pimples. It is most likely to occur during puberty, when increasing androgen levels activate the sebaceous glands which begin producing sebum. As androgen levels continue to rise, sebaceous glands become hypertrophic, and the amount of sebum greatly increases.
It is thought to affect three in every four people aged 11-30 and for many it is not severe enough to require additional treatment other than over the counter remedies. However it can leave life-long scars for a number of sufferers. Triggers may include lifestyle choices, such as diet, sleep pattern, hygiene, sun exposure, and stress.
LET’S DISPEL SOME MYTHS
Sunscreen can clog your pores: Sunscreen is essential for each and every one of us so don’t skip on the SPF. If you’re concerned about break-outs you can use a non-comedogenic skincare formulated to not cause pore blockages and breakouts.
Chocolate can cause acne: There is no evidence that acne is caused by what we eat. Yes, a healthy, balanced will do much to boost your well-being, but eating lots of the wrong types of food doesn’t have much bearing on sufferers.
Acne is the result of bad hygiene: Experts say that acne is physiological condition, so if you’re going to get it you’re going to get it. In fact, research shows that if you wash too much you may remove the skin’s protective oils.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO TACKLE ACNE?
As an aesthetician I recommend the innovative ZO SKINCARE range. Created by world renowned dermatologist Dr Zein Obagi, the products aim to tackle acne breakouts with an essential daily regimen that includes skin preparation, exfoliation and stimulation of epidermal renewal, barrier repair, hydration and sun protection. As he explains: “Healthy skin is less susceptible to acne. Accordingly, the treatment objective should not be to only temporarily slow down sebaceous gland activity and dry up the pimples, but to restore skin health while correcting all of the contributing factors responsible for causing acne at the same time.”
ZO hero products include Aknetrol Acne Treatment, Cebatrol Oil Control Pads, Glycogent Exfoliation Accelerator, Offects TE-Pads Acne Pore Treatment and Aknebright Acne Spot and Pigment Treatment which are designed to help control oil, exfoliate dead skin cells, unclog pores, destroy bacteria growth and prevent eruptions.
