Printer presses ahead despite tough conditions
Paul O’Collins, head of innovation at Business West, talks to Andrew Law, sales and marketing director at Integrity Print about how the company has not only survived, but flourished, in a declining global print market
In the UK, there are many traditional industries that have been hit very hard by both new technology and globalisation – and none more so than printing. However, despite the rise of technologies such
as LaserJet printing and desk top publishing, and the general decline in the use of traditional volume business printing such as cheque books and paper payroll slips – print continues to be an important part of the global economy. The UK print industry is worth an estimated
£13.8bn per annum, employing over 116,000 staff in over 10,000 companies, which is fairly impressive – but while the UK has maintained its ranking as the world’s fifth largest producer of printed products, since 2010 the UK has lost 24,000 industry employees, 6,000 in the past two years alone, and seen market size reduce by £0.5bn since 2015. So what do we mean by the print industry?
Well, in broad terms printing activity in the UK is divided up as follows:
34% Advertising literature and event programmes, tickets etc.
30% Newspapers, magazines, books, brochures etc.
5% Security printing 14% Printed packaging and labels 17% Other printing And in the past few years these percentage
figures have remained constant, which suggests
Generations of families have worked at the firm, which is based in Midsomer Norton
