In order for the economy to grow, skills within our workforce need to be drastically improved at a regional and national level. “The skills shortage is prevalent across the country and this, coupled with our low unemployment rate in the West of England, can mean businesses really struggle to recruit the right staff for now and in the future,” explained Nicky Williams, head of skills at Business West. “We need to make sure businesses understand all of the recruitment and training options available to them and make an effort to work with education providers to ensure future training provision is relevant to their needs.”

www.businesswest.co.uk/skills ... so invest in future workforce
With skills shortages so prevalent, it makes sense to invest in the future workforce to try and alleviate this problem in years to come. Businesses across the West of England have been getting involved in trying to overcome this issue by pledging to support the future of skills in the region through Business West’s Skills West programme. “People entering the workplace often lack the skills
they need to be successful”, explained Julia Gurr, employability coordinator at Business West. “This can sometimes come down to a lack of knowledge of the
sector or too little experience of the core skills needed to work within a busy team. By encouraging businesses to invest in their staff as well as other future workers, we hope to tackle skills gaps and help companies recruit and retain the right people.” So far local businesses have taken part in careers
talks, hired apprentices or held work placements but there’s many ways to get involved if you are interested.
