UMBERTO GIANNINI CELEBRATING 18 AMAZING YEARS
This month marks 18 years since the Umberto Giannini salon in Worcester opened its doors. With a reputation for creating glamorous, fashion-forward looks for an ever-growing client list, the salon is a franchise of the multi-award-winning Umberto Giannini brand, which also boasts a best-selling haircare range and three other salon sites in the West Midlands.
We got together with salon franchisee Shirley Thornhill- Jester to hear more about the salon’s phenomenal success…
thing as a ‘one size fits all’ cut or colour and we pride ourselves on offering a bespoke service to each and every client. The key to our success is listening to what people want and delivering consistently.
Tell us about the services you offer. We cater for all hair types, all ages, male and female. Whether your style is straight, curly, sharp, bold, natural, coloured or anything else in between, we can match you to a suitable stylist! If you’re looking for an incredible shade, you won’t find better than our amazing colouring team. From flawlessly-blended balayage to mermaid pastels and the most natural-looking highlights, we can do it all.
Tell us about the day the salon opened 18 years ago. I was incredibly nervous. Opening a new business is always a gamble but I was full of ambition and confidence. The day the salon opened, there was a queue outside the door and in that instant, I knew I would make it work. Within four years, we had outgrown our space and had to move into new premises in Pump Street, where we have remained to this day.
What do you enjoy about hairdressing? Although I’ve been developing in my craft for 29 years now, I have more fun and enjoyment with each new day. My clients needs vary so much but they all have one thing in common – they are looking for a change. Most of the time it might only be a minor tweak, but it creates a huge impact on how the person feels. I never tire of that feeling of seeing a client transformed, leaving the salon with a spring in their step and with their head held high! My number one priority is helping all our clients to look and feel sensational.
What makes your salon so special? Hairdressing is a really competitive market, but I think what sets us apart is our amazing team. There are 22 of us in total, each boasting a wealth of experience and expertise honed over years of extensive training. We’re committed to delivering quality and excellence within a diverse range of hair services. There is no such

What styles are popular right now? Trends tend to be very seasonal – currently, we’re doing lots of wedding hair: Tara’s our bridal specialist and leads the session team, who have been creating some beautiful romantic updos. We’re also busy with bookings for high school proms – we do a lot of braids, curls and hair-up for teenagers who want the chance to feel like a celeb for the evening! Blonde is huge because it’s the summer and everyone wants that beachy vibe – lots of clients are trying balayage as it’s lower maintenance and gives hair that grown-out look that’s a bit more modern. We’re also very excited to be introducing L’Oreal Professionnel’s organic natural haircare range, Source Essentielle, as well as the chemical-free,100% natural Botanea Herbal hair colour this summer.
Can you sum up the Umberto Giannini signature style – what makes your work standout from the competition? Anyone familiar with the product range will know that UG is all about glamorous, sexy hair. It’s fashion-led but wearable with an L.A vibe – think selfie-ready cuts and blow-dries and colour that turns heads!
But, behind each look is a technically precise cut and colour. Our prices for a cut and finish start at £22 and increase according to the experience of each team member. My motto is ‘Invest in your hair – it’s the crown you never take off.’ When your hair looks great, you feel as though you can take on the world – and that’s worth every penny!
