Livestock New product helps pigs reach market weight

Animal health and nutrition com- pany Alltech has launched a new product to promote a healthy gut and microflora in pigs. Viligen focuses on enhancing gut form and function while op- timizing the immune system to maintain health status. For pro- ducers with weaned pigs, Viligen promotes gut health by directly targeting the gut mucosa. When the technology is add- ed to the diet of piglets, it pre- pares the immature gut for ef- ficient nutrient absorption and rapid growth, and it encourag- es feed intake by providing fatty acids, prebiotic components and readily available mineral forms. “Viligen is the first product of its kind and will be available in all Alltech markets,” said Jules Tay- lor-Pickard, global species direc- tor at Alltech. “Pig producers will notice better intestinal health in their piglets, which will lead to better animal performance.” Viligen will also drive feed in-

take and support health and sur- vivability, said Dr Taylor-Pickard. Increasing feed intake in the pig- lets optimizes performance and provides a sturdy platform for optimal health, specifically gut health.

By promoting gut health, Vili- gen is designed to help more pigs reach market weight. As demon- strated in commercial research, piglets consuming Viligen have improved average daily gain and average daily feed intake.

Mark Haighton appointed to AHDB Pork Sector Board

Tulip director Mark Haighton has been appointed to the Pork Sector Board of the Agriculture and Horticulture De- velopment Board (AHDB). Mr Haighton is Tulip’s pig supply chain director. He

leads a team that works closely with all elements of the British pigmeat supply chain including farmers, hauli- ers, abattoirs, customers and external bodies such as the Food Standards Agency.

He has worked in the UK pig processing sector since 1998 when he started at the George Adams & Sons Ltd abattoir in Spalding – initially as a livestock buyer be- fore the company was bought out by Tulip. He will sit on the AHDB board as a processor member for three years.

Alltech says the technology addresses all profit and produc- tion aspects of nursery pig nutri- tion, including feed intake, body weight gain, piglet health, surviv- ability and improved numbers of all-value pigs.
