Dwindling effectiveness
against one of the leading path- ogens of oilseed rape could also lead to substantial losses to the oilseed rape breeding industry, according to the study by scien- tists at Hertfordshire University. This is the fi rst study show- ing that the host resistant gene Rlm7 has become less effective at controlling the Phoma stem canker pathogen Leptosphaer- ia maculans in the UK and is of great importance to plant breed- ers and farmers.

important arable crop with 2.2 million tonnes harvested in 2017. The warning is particularly timely because the withdrawal of key fungicides for controlling phoma stem canker means farmers must rely more on rape vari-
eties and cultivars that have good resistance against the pathogen causing the disease. Georgia Mitrousia, lead au- thor on the study which was published in the journal Plant Pathology, said: “Oilseed rape cultivation has been increasing in the UK in recent years and is of vital importance for the UK’s agriculture industry, and the wid- er UK economy.”
Varietal choice is a key way of combating Phoma
One resistant gene bred into many commercial oilseed rape cultivars in the UK is the Rlm7 gene. Dr Mitrousia said breeders would hopefully develop further strategies to prevent the loss of commercially available cultivars. “This includes combining Rlm gene resistance with quantita- tive resistance in the same cul- tivar and developing strategies to rotate development of different Rlm genes to ensure consistent harvest of oilseed rape for many years to come.”
