“The mustard would then be killed off when the Clearfi eld her- bicide is applied,” says Mr Thorn- ton.
“DK Impressario is a good ex- ample of a Clearfi eld oilseed rape variety that not only offers good
yield potential, but also excellent vigour and disease resistance, plus pod shatter resistance and early maturity.” As well as looking at end mar- ket needs, Mr Thornton urges growers to look at how variety choice can help respond to wid- er agronomy challenges – such as the need for vigorous-establish- ment to help mitigate against cab- bage stem fl ea beetle pressure, as well as resistance to disease. “From a disease viewpoint, al- though light leaf spot was tradi- tionally a more northern problem, it can now have a signifi cant ef- fect on crops around the country. Therefore, consider robust light leaf spot resistance.
“Good disease resistance can
give fl exibility with fungicide spray timings, which is impor- tant in unpredictable weather. “An example of a variety of- fering high yield potential, along with excellent autumn vigour plus good resistance to light leaf spot, is the hybrid INV1010. It also has good stem canker resist- ance plus pod shatter resistance.”
