Gleam promises shine on feed
wheat challenges • Consistent ‘barn-fi lling’ performance • Drill from September to November • Suitable for both heavy and light soils
A Gleam
new, high-yielding win- ter feed wheat variety that could ease the pres- sure on growers facing agronomic challenges is being launched for planting this autumn.
Hard Group 4 winter wheat continues
Syngenta’s
track record of varieties that of- fer good Septoria tritici resist- ance while producing barn-fi ll- ing yields without being late to mature, says Tracy Creasy, the breeder’s seeds marketing man- ager.
“With an output of 105% of control varieties – equivalent to 11.55 t/ha – Gleam has the sec- ond highest UK treated yield fi g- ure on the 2018/19 AHDB Recom- mended List,” she explains.
Consistent yields
“It has also produced high yields consistently over the last three seasons, and performs exception- ally well in the east. But what sets Gleam apart is that it combines its high yields with characteris- tics that make it easy to manage. “With its strong Septoria trit-
ici resistance on the AHDB Rec- ommended List of 6.2, Gleam
makes an ideal choice for grow- ers wanting high yield potential plus the reassurance of resilience if fungicide spray timings become compromised.
Gleam has one of the highest untreated yields available on the AHDB Recommended List – equal to popular variety Gra- ham, says Mrs Creasy. Its com- bination of relatively early ma- turity plus stiff straw makes it a useful choice to ease time pres- sures at harvest.
Autumn drilling The variety has a fl exible drilling window and can be drilled from the fi rst week of September to late November. Its high tillering capacity and tiller maintenance can be useful in blackgrass sit- uations by allowing longer win- dows for stale seedbeds. “In addition, with the prospect
of having to delay winter wheat drilling until after peak aphid activity in autumn, as a way of managing barley yellow dwarf virus risk without neonicotinoid seed treatment chemistry, drill- ing date fl exibility is a useful op- tion to have.
Gleam is an easy-to-manage feed wheat with a fl exible drilling window, says Syngenta
“
Gleam is versatile and yields well as a fi rst or second wheat.
“Gleam is an incredibly versa- tile variety. It is well-adapted to all regions, as well as to different rotational positions, since it has yielded well as a fi rst or second
wheat – and is suitable for both heavy and light soils.”
It also has orange wheat blos-
som midge resistance – added security in susceptible situa- tions. Gleam is an ideal variety for growers wanting an easy-to- manage, barn-fi lling feed wheat with a fl exible drilling window, says Ms Creasy. “There has been a lot of interest already.”
