Organisers call time on anannual charity lunch

A POPULAR charity lunchwhich has raised almost £70,000 has been held for the last time. The Inner Wheel Club of Maid-

stone have decided that this year’s event, which was held in March, will be the last one. This year saw the 50th anniver-

sary of the event, but the team be- hind it say they feel unable to carry on, due to the pressures of arrang- ing the lunch. Club correspondent Elizabeth

Hext said: “It is such a big commit- ment and it has become harder for us to do it. “Our membership is getting

older andwe have no young blood coming into the group. “We have raised a lot of money

doing it, but it is a very hard day – and there’s somuch to be done be- forehand aswell.” The InnerWheelClub is a ladies-

only organisation, and the Maid- stone group, which has about 30 members, has retained the mem- bership criteria of being for the

wives of members of the Rotary Club. Every year since 1968 they have

opened up their doors for the char- ity event and over the years they have raised £67,000,withmore than 100 guests at the most recent lunch inMarch. But as former presidentMrsHext

explains, all good thingsmust come to an end. “When Jean Day and ReneeMar-

tin proposed the lunch, they never imagined it would be so popular,”

she said. “I knowthat to be true as I hadthat conversationwithMrsDay. “We found papers the other day

where we had discussions about stopping the lunch in 2003, so we got another 15 years out of it. “Wewould just like to say a huge

thank you to everyone who has at- tended, helped and supported the dinner over the years and we will continue to support charities locally in otherways.” The club meets twice a month at Hollingbourne Village Hall.
